You came to the right place, you will soon be surrounded by lots of people who are super knowledgeable about these bikes. Just a heads up - I ain't one of 'em. But if you ever need an extra set of hands or anything, give me a shout since I'm also in Madison.

Great to hear ! I am in the process of adjusting valves. I will soon be posting about possible shim swapping with anyone that has shims laying around.

Is there anything I should do ? other then valve adjustment, cam chain tension, carb sync, possible middle and final gear oil change

You might want to pull the final drive to check and grease the splines on the shaft. Also maybe check the headstock bearings.

So you decided whether to pull the cam or use the shim removal tool?

most likely getting the tool . i don't want to mess with timing if I don't have to. although I would like to see what the valves look like but that would require a new head gasket.. hmmmmm

Yes, the splines on the end of shaft number 35, they fit into part number 11 on the final drive. I like to use Honda Moly Grease, part number 08734-0001. It contains 60% Molybdenum and is designed for drive shaft splines & other final drive components. Also use that stuff to grease the splines on the left side of the rim that engage the final drive output,

Welcome to the forum. You will be glad that you stopped in. There is much information for you here. Everything is covered by a large group of knowledgeable and experienced XSives here.

Not a lot of information can be had from me on your XJ as I have only the XS experience. There is a grease fitting at the final drive end of the swing arm that is supposed to lubricate those splines on the XS bikes and I assume on the XJ also. It has been deemed by all members of the forum that this grease fitting does not properly lube the splines.

Service manual says to apply 30cc of grease. One stroke of a grease gun is one cc. Do the math. That is a lot of grease. But removing the FD to lube the splines manually is a sure fire way to know that is done properly. You will also see what shape the splines are in.

Removing the cams to adjust the valves is one method. I disagree with this procedure as there is too much that can go wrong and it is too time consuming.

If you do not already have a ACCT on the cam chain, you should think about putting one on. Do a search here and you will see the benefits and procedure. If you do decide to replace or adjust the manual one, you must follow procedure exactly in order to avoid getting the cams out of time and resulting in bent valves.

Good luck with your new project and again - Welcome.

Thank You ! Read somewhere that that grease fitting puts grease on the outside of part number 11 coupling not on the splines where its supposed to go .

I was looking into getting a ACCT .. I read to get one off a 85 venture if possible ? also read that I may have to file the bolt holes to get an exact fit .. was yours a plug and play ??

No mod needed if using the Venture self adjuster. The splines in question DO get lube from 30pumps from grease gun in spite of the naysayers. Your choice.
Mine has never been removed from new, when I bought it. Very doubtful to have lasted this long and 80+K if it weren't getting lube. In fact, it will start pushin' red Conoco Super-Sta lube out around the 4bolt mounting flange if over done.

Welcome, to add to your list, go over all your brakes from MC's to calipers and adjust the levers also.

These bikes are heavy and fast with dated brake systems and anything less than A1 condition will increase your odds of an unsafe incident happening.

Lube everything, change the fork oil, clean and use dielectric grease on all electrical connections, spend all your time your not working on your bike and read, read, and read some more threads on what your working on ATM
Oh, almost forgot your bike will run better if you post a pic or two
