Is the XS850LG a good bike? What are the pros and cons of this model? Does anyone own one now or have you had one in the past?

    Thanks, Mike

    850 Midnight

    Hi, Mike -

One of our members, Yamanatic (Warren), posted an 850 LG here in the forums back in Dec. 2013, but he ended up selling it on Ebay in April 2014.

HERE is the original Ebay listing:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/1980-Yamaha-...p2047675.l2557

You might try sending him a PM ... I'm sure he knows a lot about this model.

From what I've read and heard Mike, the 850 is a great bike, the successor of the 750.

As far as I can tell they never really caught on simply because of the odd number of cylinders.

They were built up to 81, same as the 11.

www.yamaha-triples.org is the place you need to go.

The only complaint I've heard is that the Hitachi carburetors aren't as user friendly as the Mikunis. They can have the same 2nd gear issue as the Eleven. The XS850 requires splitting the cases to fix it.

The xs850 special isn't a bad bike at all, they cruise down the highway at sencable speed nicely and are kind of quick if you get on it. I've had 3 in my life and loved them all. I love the sound of a triple. It's no xs11.......I traded back down to an xs850 and missed the 11 almost right away. I didn't get much better miles per gallon. I really do enjoy trashing thru the gears tho. They can be a little hard to start at times.

I was looking at this one:

              http://www.ebay.com/itm/201110218831...:B:WNA:US:1653

Looking closely at the pictures and the story, I decided not to bid on it. Looking closely at the pictures showed a lot of roughness all over. The fact that it had not run in a long time did not help a lot.

This one sold back in April and appeared to be a much nicer example plus it sold for twice as much:

              http://www.ebay.com/itm/1980-Yamaha-...p2047675.l2557

Thanks for all of the input. It was priceless information in determining value and sell-ability of these motorcycles.

I do not see a lot of these around. It is a good looking bike. May have to get one eventually.

I have two of them, and a couple 750's. I don't have an attachment to them as-much as my 750's. As stated above, gas mileage is not much better, with less grunt than the 1100. However, the 750/850 is noticeable much lighter around the corners. I threw the Mikuni MKII's on my 850's, and they're easier to tune.

                      Edit: I have standard models.
