Shock absorbers are a routinely replaced item. If the bike is a '79 the shocks could be an upgrade from a later model or even stock to a later '79 bike. Reflectors on the shocks mean nothing to me.

I wasn't aware that some late '79 Specials had '80-spec shocks installed ... thanks for pointing that out, Marty ...

      The plot thickens ...

So it could pretty likely be a 79' with a custom rear fender and updated rear shocks?
        Have:
        1994 FZR600
        1982 XJ1100

        Had:
        1996 YZF600R
        2001 Honda xr125
        Suzuki race 80
        Honda PW 50
        Etc.

        Getting:

81 Special would have reflectors on the rear shocks . Also consider.the dealer could have swapped them back in the day.

On a 81 the rear drive is black also.

Only the '81 Midnights had the black final drive from the factory ... the "regular" '81 Specials had the silver-painted final drive.

The 81 special parts bike I had sported a black FD. It and the entire swingarm went on The Green Hornet.

I think, but I'm not sure, the Venturer had a black FD also along with the same black highlights on the engine.

Here is a photo of an '81 Special for sale by member Rowland2004 back in 2011 ... and it does have the black FD with highlights.

                              http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...0/IMG_0425.jpg

But it's a little puzzling, Greg ... I've seen '81 Specials with silver FD's, and also some with black FD's ...

And the black ones (except for the above) all looked like they had been repainted ... at least the ones I've seen, anyway ...

Did Yamaha use both silver and black FD's on the '81 "regular" Specials? Someone please set me straight on this ...

EDIT: I don't type very fast, Brant ...
