Hey again,
What hasn't been told to you is that the CLUNKING into 1st is part of the wear that the dogs/slots get that can eventually lead to the dredded 1st and 2nd gear skip/failure. So..the techniques mentioned to reduce the clunk are also in helping to reduce the wear on the gears dogs/slots. See the tech tips/ repairs/ transmission for info about this malady and the work involved in fixing it.
The gears are not synchromesh type, and so you can cause damage to the dogs/slots when trying to shift without using the clutch IF you miss the rpm match and end up grinding them a bit, so that's why we don't really recommend shifting without the clutch, but knowing you could is helpful for that "IN CASE" where the clutch cable breaks!

As for CL, I bet you did. I picked it up in Joliet. It's gonna live in Chicago with me for what I hope will be a long time.

Good, then you're both close enough to make the rally in Michigan in August.

Also, gonna try for that MI thing. It's pretty close to both my sister and I birthday. We both ride. She lives in MI so we never ride together.
ah nice! Yeah, I lived in Pilsen for 3 1/2 years, then moved to Logan, now living in Bucktown. We ought to meet up for a ride sometime.81H Venturer
