[QUOTE=dpotter58;432945]What's up with you guys? I ask for help and get sarcasm.
OR perhaps you gave sarcasm & got help. Been a Looong winter up there? Congrats on nice find. Seems like midnights in good condition are getting scarcer.
Sometimes the rarest bike is one that is old & still stock. Keep us posted on your progress. (I believe the offers to take any stock parts off your hands were Sincere!)
Good luck wrenching,
PS what are you going to name it?
It is a great big beautiful world out there

There are all kinds of things people can do with these bikes depending on what they want to accomplish. You can do serious mods to make it a drag bike, you can make it a chopper, you can make it a bobber, or a great restoration. You can make it a rat bike just doing the best you can in this economy to keep ridding. Some of these when done right make it an expensive enterprise but if you want praise and want a thing of art it costs. However unlike Mr Potter if you have no money, plan, skill, or common sense the best you can expect to turn the bike into a rag (ridicules a@@ garbage). If you truly create a work of art I believe all here will praise you. Take what many believe a great pick for restoration into a rag and you might just want to talk about it in a different forum than this one. One thing you can count on here is opinionated comments.
Now what can I help with.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.
Are the tank and side cover badges silver chrome, or gold. This is being discussed in another thread.
Silver. I have had 6 or more of them and they were all silver. Another point, some of the '80s have the gold ring on the alternator and timing cover and some of the '81s didn't.
