  • Anybody Make an Engine Stand Out of Wood?

    Looking to paint my engine soon, and figured wood would be cheapest.
    1979 XS1100F
    2H9 Mod, Truck-Lite LED Headlight, TECHNA-FIT S/S Brake Lines, Rear Air Shocks, TKAT Fork Brace, Dyna DC-I Coils, TC Fuse Block, Barnett HD Clutch Springs, Superbike Handlebars, V-Star 650 ACCT, NGK Irridium Plugs, OEM Exhaust. CNC-Cut 2nd Gear Dogs; Ported/Milled Head; Modded Airbox: 8x8 Wix Panel Filter; #137.5 Main Jet, Viper Yellow Paint, Michelin Pilot Activ F/R, Interstate AGM Battery, 14MM MC, Maier Fairing, Cree LED Fog Lights.

    JAT, when I remove my SF's engine, for repainting of the frame, I'll most likely run rods through the mount bosses and hang it from the rafters so it can be easily accessed, top to bottom.

    I know crazySteve built a metal engine stand, it's in one of his posts, if your looking for ideas.

            Yeah Steve, but I don't want to buy an engine stand for a $30 paint job.

              ...rods through the MOUNT BOSSES... is nothing like the pic, and it will allow every part of the engine to be painted.

                Paint one side and roll it over when dry and paint the other side. I did this and it came out ok, YMMV.

                  Yeah, I guess I read that too quick. Maybe that's what I'll do again. I hope joists above can hold the weight of the engine . . .

                    You could build a 2x4 frame box and have a rod through the mount holes hold the engine up...

                      If you have open ceiling joists ( no drywall or floor above) span a few with a couple 2x4's, to take the weight, and hang the engine off of them. Use a little longer rods so the slings, straps, ropes, chains or whatever you use to hang it, are out of your way.

                        +1. Having had the engine out and moved it around, I can tell you it is a heavy pig of an engine. I am not sure how you folks are getting your engines that high up off the floor. Maybe I am getting older than I thought, but lifting that engine by hand is not an option for me these days.

                          Don- I'm 28, full of pee & vinegar, and that engine is too heavy for me! I used the ratcheting straps on my 750 to lift it.

                            I hear ya buddy, no more Hero here either.

                            I've got a few different hoists at my disposal and my favorite is the small electric 800lb. one.

                              hahaha, when I picked up my newest bike, I brought ramps to push it on pick up bed....brakes were frozen shut so no way that would work....
                              guy I bought it from was handicap, so he couldn't help....I'm thinking I'm stuck....
                              He calls a couple of scrunny kids over, they pick it up without my help and THROW it on my pick up!!!
