I will be installing a few different HAM radios and other related gear in my pickup. What I want to do is mount a separate battery that everything will be connected too. I want the separate battery to charge off the vehicle alternator but then I want it to be disconnected from the vehicle system when the key is off so that I can still use the equipment and not run the vehicle battery down.
1) I was thinking a deep cycle battery would be best for this situation but have heard that you shouldn't charge deep cycles at that high of a charge rate from a vehicle alternator, but I get a lot of contradictory opinions here.
2) What would be the best way to wire it in? Would a battery isolator be enough?
