  • Did Someone Say Build Thread?!!

So, I was looking for a Standard model but those are few and far between at best. I just have not found one that needed as much work as I like (ie...as cheap as I needed.) So I found this craigslist ad .

So, I could not avoid a trip. So I drove up to see/get the poor neglected bike. Well, I get there and the bike is in a garage that is in the back "yard", he ask me if I want to ride back with him to see it. And I'm wondering where we are going, as all I see is a foot of snow nice and even. So, we jump in the car and he drives me back to the garage, about 400 feet or so behind the house. Obviously, I decided to get it. So, I got to find out just how well a Honda Van drives through snow pulling a trailer. I also found that a bike with no air in the tires is a real PITA to push. So, an hour later I had the bike loaded up and pulled back out to the street. A while later I finally pulled the seat out of my anal cavity.

So, here it is sitting in my driveway.....

I do have the left side cover, and the tab is intact. The paint is good, and the tank is only lightly rusted. It does seem like it sat for a loonng time. It will hopefully not need as much as work as some I have brought home. But it will be a fun time.

    Price is Right

Looks like you definitely got your money's worth on this find and it was in your state. I have found several, but NEVER in my state. Good job!

Thank guys! I normally try to haggle on price, but this time I just couldn't. The seat is pristine, the brakes are not even locked up. PO told me had spent over $600 on it at a shop before he had to give up riding.

And yes, I asked about the Honda, it was already sold.

So you paid the 299.99 or did you just give him 300 and let him keep the change?

Phil, that is one of the down sides, it is not to bad looking, except the right side has a dent at the outlet, road rash. And both sides have welded up spots on them. If it seems solid inside I am thinking perhaps to grind the welds down and paint the exhaust.

I have not really checked if the engine is locked up or not. At the price though, with the seat in that condition, the paint in good condition, and the rear bag, it was hard to pass it up.

Thanks Mark. I have the seat, tank, backrest, trunk and such off. Pulled the airbox and carbs out, and got the battery box out. I do not like the smell of turpentine gasoline though. Oh well, better than it having turned to goo.

Battery box will need some cleaning up, pretty rusty, looks like one cell of the battery had its cover break and I am thinking the acid got onto some stuff.

Air filter will need replacing. I think a rodent got into the box and started pulling filter media off to make a nest.

I tried to turn the motor by the 6mm screw on the timing plate, can't hardly budge it, but I have the plugs in. It moves some with a crescent wrench on the larger timing plate "nut". I will pull the plugs and load some MMO or PB Blaster into the holes while I play with the carbs and such. Then see how things turn.

Thanks Phil! I was intrigued by the driving lights and their supports. Looks almost like it is made by Vetter the way they mount to the fairing mounts and all.

Well, the deconstruction started last night....

Got the seat, tank, carbs, trunk, backrest, luggage rack, and grab bar removed. Also pulled the old battery out and the battery box. The battery box is crusty!! But it should clean up and paint just fine.

The pin striping is nice, although it is in top of the clear, so I may clear over it all.

And now the good news is, no rust on any plugs...

Which decreases the likelihood that the engine is overly rusted and frozen. I got a good dose of MMO down each cylinder. Plan to let it sit a few days while I clean up the carbs and such till I try to rotate the engine again.

so no offense if i say, " dont bend a stuck valve when turning engine"
cuz thats probably something i would do.
