  • Hello all, new here, need help!!!

Hello all. I am a long time, avid motorcyclist. I picked up a 1100 late fall, as a rescue bike. The long and short is this, I have been through the carburetors ad nausea. The jets are clean, the passages are clean. I installed new floats, new carb holders, and new diaphrams. I welded up the few holes in the exhaust, so it is all good there. I balanced the carbs, although the bike is not running correctly. 1 and 4 are running fine. 2 and 3 backfire at low engine speed. Crank the throttle, and she screams. All jets match across all carburetors. Unless there is some magical idle jet passage I am not seeing here, the bike should run tip top. I boiled the carburetors last night, and no change! Engine timing is set properly as well. To be honest, I am just flat out of ideas, and need help. If I cannot figure this out, I will have to part her out........

Where to look guys? could this be a bad coil? I know 1 and 4 run together, as 2 and 3 do. Never seen a bad coil cause back fire at low speed, just flat dead miss.... HELP!!

    Thanks from snow covered MI!

You most likely have a broken pick up coil wire under the ignition cover left side of engine. Here is the fix...

You've been at this for a long time, so you know most carburetor problems are electrical.

                WELCOME to the group, Layne!
I've only been here a short time, but I've yet to see a question posted that the "collective" couldn't answer. Some very knowledgeable people here.

                  That is hilarious!

I will get some pictures up when I get a chance to take one or two. The bike is quite torn down at the moment. She needed much clean up. Had to pull the tank, remove a bad lining job, weld a pin hole that became softball size, and many other little things. I will have her on the road by spring. And by spring I mean mid February. You know, just after the snow stops and the temps just begin to climb.

So, broke out some wire and the old solder rifle. Bike used to misfire on 2 and 3. Now it misfires on 2,3, and 4!

I guess I will be rebuilding that entire wire harness.......

To the my new, local friends. I will meet up with you all in the near future I am sure. I am VP of one of the local BMW clubs, and therefor spend most of my time on two wheels. We will have to meet for breakfast sometime....
