  • Venting a little

So I saw an ad on craigslist yesterday for a nice CB750C for pretty good price. Call the guy up last night and set an apt to see the bike. Its about 40 minutes from me.

So I drive up today to see it, and he tells me he just sold it to some one else. Now, its bad enough he could not call to tell me not to come, but I would have thought he would either tell me if he had some one else looking at it before me, or give me the chance to look before he sold to someone who called after me.

I guess the good manners my parents taught me were not handed down in other families.

    Yeah, I agree.
    That sucked.

    Hate it when that happens.

Too bad, that might have been a cool bike!

Sorry to hear that. What a waste of your time and energy.
How Rude and Inconsiderate are we getting?? There is just no excuse. Worse he probably never even thought twice about it.

Don- See it as a good thing you did not get that bike. People like that are inconsiderate at the least, and who knows what other personality flaws they have that may lead to a lemon sell.

I think his reaction is what really bothered me. He smiled and all but laughed when he told me he just sold it. Then said "you should have called before you drove up here." I just shook my head and walked away, time has taught me he was to old for me to think I would impart any wisdom or manners into him.

I hate to say this, but he was right....

I wish I had a dollar for every caller that tells me they'll be out to see whatever I'm selling and then don't show. Now I'll admit that the seller should have mentioned that there were other lookers if he knew about them, but unless he agreed to 'hold' it until you got there, it was on you to check.

I've even had a guy leave a cash deposit, then fail to show up to finish the sale.

                Golden Rule

More and more we are living with people that only care about themselves and no one else. There is a generation that has not learned the golden rule, and if they have, sees not reason to practice it.
I have painfully learned to protect myself from this behavior, and still get burned by it every so often.
                Best advice.
Write yourself a set of rules that will help protect you from a---holes like this.

I see your point Steve, however, in this case, I asked when he was available to show the bike, he set the time. So I was not expecting him to hold it for me, I thought it was the earliest available time to be able to see and purchase it. So there would not be any one to hold it from.

I also might have been more understanding if he seemed the least bit apologetic about it. Instead he seemed tickled by it. And certainly made it seem like it was all my issue. Kind of a "sorry about your luck" as he grinned and shut the door.

                    Sorry Steve,
But the seller was not right. Don had set up an appointment with this guy. The seller should have respected that appointment.
People that are showing you disrespect by not showing up, and not calling are breaking the same simple rules. You have just found a way to except the bad behavior.

                      Hi Don,
OTOH, how many times has someone called you saying he'll be right there with the money and never shown up?
First guy there with the money gets the bike.

I'm not excusing his behavior after you got there, there's no excuse for rudeness.

But like Fred says, unless you have a clear understanding with the seller, the first buyer with the cash gets it....

On the other end of the stick

Sorry to hear about your lost I however am a the one trying to sell a guy calls from Alberta I live in Ontario he is out there working and is coming threw Ontario in 3wks. and wants me to hold the smowmobile trailer I am selling he says its sold being the nice guy I am even with no hold down I said I would unless someone else comes along I would let him know. Today I had to go to the DMV to get my 2014 Lic. Stickers so I asked what had to be done when the trailer is sold here in Ontario Ca. we keep our plates when we sell something so he would have to take the ownership to the DMV and get his own new plate or a travel paper and do it in newfoundland where he lives the DMV is 2 minutes from my house so I came home and phoned him to let him know what he had to do before he could take the trailer GUESS WHAT he doesn't want it DAMM NEWFFIE'S.

In your situation Newbee, I would never had agreed to that deal. If your committed to buying it, and agreed to a price, then he needs to send half or more, or I would tell him, its yours if it is still here. Once he has looked and made his decision to buy it, either come across with the Benjamins, or it is not sold.

In my situation, I would have understood if the guy told me he could show me the bike at 4PM and I said I can't make it till 6:30. In that situation if someone beat me to it, then so be it. But in this case I asked when he could be available to show it and he said 6-6:30. To me it would be like seeing an ad in the paper for bike at a dealership, you call and tell them you will be there when they open. You get there at opening time and the store opened early and sold it already.

Its not like I expected the guy to say oh, let me call him and get the bike back for you. I just expected more of an apology for wasting my time. Since he called me back after I left a message the night before, perhaps a phone call to let me know someone else was coming, or that it sold at least.
