You really need to check your local laws; some places it's not a big deal, other places it is....

Here (Washington state), a bike with no title is just parts for me.
Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

    '78E ???? owner - Modder project FJ forks, 4-piston calipers F/R, 160/80-16 rear tire
    '82 XJ rebuild project
    '80SG restified, red SOLD
    '79F parts...
    '81H more parts...

    Other current bikes:

    '82 XL1000 w/1450cc Buell, Baker 6-speed, in-progress project

    Yep, can't leave nuthin' alone...

Be careful of these 'lost title' outfits; some states are aware of them and that raises a red flag. If you do try one of these outfits, be aware of your local laws before talking to them.

Chuck, about 2 years ago, I emailed Va DMV this very question. I can't remember exactly the answer, but it seemed to be not TOO hard.
          Here's the website:
Everything you need to know about owning a vehicle in Virginia, including titling, registration and plates.

I think this is the form you need: http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/vsa12.pdf

also the application for title too:

Hope this helps get you in the right direction.

Thanks. Yeah i got a $40 xs750 off CL with no title. I have enough 3cyl parts to make it complete. figure I could send it off to someone else as a project. I just needed a few correct little things to finish the red 750.

In MI you take the bill of sale with the bikes VIN number on it to your auto insurance agent. For $50 they will obtain a Surity Bond. That bond is then taken to the DMV and a title is issued. Maybe its that easy in your state too.

So how does that work if you sell the bike to someone outside of Georgia? I ask because I have relatives in Georgia, if I can "sell" them the bike, and then get it back, to get a title, that would open up a LOT of nice projects for me.

That depends entirely on YOUR state. In some states, you can get a title with a Georgia Bill of Sale. 1986 and older requires no title here.

A few years ago, an automobile could be transferred, with the Georgia plates and registration, to a Colorado owner, who would then take those to the DMV, and a CO title would be issued.
It had to be done before the registration expired.
Call you local DMV and ask. CZ

Today the guy that I got the bike from called me and said he found the registration for the bike. It has a name and address for who is supposed to be the person who the bike is titled to. Well its worth a shot. The bike is in super rough shape as is but if i can get a title Ive only got $40 into the bike and Ive got enough 750/850 parts to make a rider out of it, If only I had the time. lol.
