You really need to check your local laws; some places it's not a big deal, other places it is....
Here (Washington state), a bike with no title is just parts for me.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
'78E original owner - resto project
'78E ???? owner - Modder project FJ forks, 4-piston calipers F/R, 160/80-16 rear tire
'82 XJ rebuild project
'80SG restified, red SOLD
'79F parts...
'81H more parts...
Other current bikes:
'93 XL1200 Anniversary Sportster 85RWHP
'86 XL883/1200 Chopper
'82 XL1000 w/1450cc Buell, Baker 6-speed, in-progress project
Cage: '13 Mustang GT/CS with a few 'custom' touches
Yep, can't leave nuthin' alone...

I have no experience using this outfit but I have it bookmarked since it was recommended to me when I inquired the same thing....
http://www.its-titles.com/.....>SmugMug coupon 0E8WP3kJcvvbY save $5 ..........>The Banjo Rides
There’s something about going riding with your friends, a feeling of freedom, a feeling of joy that really can’t be put into words.
It can only be fully shared by someone who’s done it.......... on any sunday

Be careful of these 'lost title' outfits; some states are aware of them and that raises a red flag. If you do try one of these outfits, be aware of your local laws before talking to them.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Chuck, about 2 years ago, I emailed Va DMV this very question. I can't remember exactly the answer, but it seemed to be not TOO hard.
Here's the website:
http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/#titling.html
I think this is the form you need: http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/vsa12.pdf
also the application for title too:
http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/vsa17a.pdf
Hope this helps get you in the right direction.Hi, my name is George & I'm a twisty addict!

Thanks. Yeah i got a $40 xs750 off CL with no title. I have enough 3cyl parts to make it complete. figure I could send it off to someone else as a project. I just needed a few correct little things to finish the red 750.1979 XS1100 Special. Nicely modified.

That depends entirely on YOUR state. In some states, you can get a title with a Georgia Bill of Sale. 1986 and older requires no title here.Marty (in Mississippi)

A few years ago, an automobile could be transferred, with the Georgia plates and registration, to a Colorado owner, who would then take those to the DMV, and a CO title would be issued.
It had to be done before the registration expired.
Call you local DMV and ask. CZ

Today the guy that I got the bike from called me and said he found the registration for the bike. It has a name and address for who is supposed to be the person who the bike is titled to. Well its worth a shot. The bike is in super rough shape as is but if i can get a title Ive only got $40 into the bike and Ive got enough 750/850 parts to make a rider out of it, If only I had the time. lol.1979 XS1100 Special.
