Decided to do the final drive swap on my 78E as interstate driving just seems too "harsh" as far as gearing. I am always looking for another gear at 75-80.
Found a nice 750 final on Fleabay for 30 shipped and started gathering my supplies for the swap.
The new final drive arrived the other day so I put my '11 on the lift and started removing the ass-end of the beast in hopes that I would be riding in a few hours.
The process was moving along fine. Got the oil holes filled on the 750 drive as per the instructions, made the driveshaft spacer with the O-rings.
Spent too long messing with the u-joint trying to get the DS lined up to re-install. Since there is about 10 pounds of old nasty axle-grease in the tube with the driveshaft, it was MESSY.
Final drive wasn't seating all the way as the driveshaft was sticking out too far. Something was amiss.
Pulled driveshaft again and found nothing wrong. Re-seated as far as it would go. Decided to lightly tap it with a small piece of wood and a small hammer. To get the retaining ring to "seat".
Ended up completely wasting the u-joint splines. I guess that with my initial "fumbling" it wasn't straight. The u-joint splines are no match for the sharp hardened driveshaft splines and got all messed up.
Riding cancelled for a few days...
Found a new driveshaft/u-joint combo on Fleabay for $21! It's only 5 hours away too! Seller has shipped and ETA is tomorrow. Gives me an evening of cleaning and adjusting I guess.
Still pissed at myself tho. At least I caught some scale-rust on my swingarm pivots that I will address tonight.
ugh.
