  • Driveshaft woes.. I'm a tool.

Decided to do the final drive swap on my 78E as interstate driving just seems too "harsh" as far as gearing. I am always looking for another gear at 75-80.

Found a nice 750 final on Fleabay for 30 shipped and started gathering my supplies for the swap.

The new final drive arrived the other day so I put my '11 on the lift and started removing the ass-end of the beast in hopes that I would be riding in a few hours.

The process was moving along fine. Got the oil holes filled on the 750 drive as per the instructions, made the driveshaft spacer with the O-rings.

Spent too long messing with the u-joint trying to get the DS lined up to re-install. Since there is about 10 pounds of old nasty axle-grease in the tube with the driveshaft, it was MESSY.

Final drive wasn't seating all the way as the driveshaft was sticking out too far. Something was amiss.

Pulled driveshaft again and found nothing wrong. Re-seated as far as it would go. Decided to lightly tap it with a small piece of wood and a small hammer. To get the retaining ring to "seat".

Ended up completely wasting the u-joint splines. I guess that with my initial "fumbling" it wasn't straight. The u-joint splines are no match for the sharp hardened driveshaft splines and got all messed up.

Riding cancelled for a few days...

Found a new driveshaft/u-joint combo on Fleabay for $21! It's only 5 hours away too! Seller has shipped and ETA is tomorrow. Gives me an evening of cleaning and adjusting I guess.

Still pissed at myself tho. At least I caught some scale-rust on my swingarm pivots that I will address tonight.

    ugh.

I came VERY CLOSE to doing the same thing. It's easy to do, so don't beat yourself over it. I've found that a loose U-joint makes the job harder. There ARE replacement u-joints available, and I can post the part number after work if you need it.

Take that retaining ring off and throw it away. It does absolutely nothing but make the job difficult.

When you get the splines all lined up the shaft will slide right into the u joint yoke easily.

Yep. I figured that out when my wife asked, "what does that little ring do?". "I guess it's there to screw everything up?", I claimed. I was correct!

The new goodies will NOT have the ring upon re-install. And tonight I will be de-greasing everything. Assembly with fresh grease will be MUCH nicer I hope.

Too bad it's a PERFECT riding evening tonight.. Grill some steaks, fresh cigar and tinker with the '11 for dessert. HA

Looks like tomorrows weather will be PERFECT for a broken 'cycle.. HOPEFULLY It will be alive by Friday. woot.

Geeze, I wish it was that cool here. It's about 100º and I'm just about to hop on the bike and head to KC on the first leg of the trip to The Lost Rally in Wisconsin.

                HA pictures...

                Looks like the XS exploded..

Figured I would grind and repaint the swingarm. MUCH better than it was. Did some cleaning up of the left side swingarm bolt area too.

XS750 Final Drive in the background on the carpet waiting for tomorrow.

I did the same thing coming back from XS Southeast last fall while sitting at a truck stop. Spent several hours with the file in a Gerber tool filing those slots back open so I could get home. At least you had the sense to do it in the comfort of your own home.. lol.

Got it done yesterday. It's all good again. I should have done this conversion last year. WELL worth the swap. Bike cruises around town soo much better now. And I like the extra "gear" for the interstate. Engine seems more "relaxed". I don't think I lost much if ANY oomph either. Bike performs the same as before the swap. I highly recommend the swap if you are an old fart and just want to cruise with blasts of "spirited" driving.

Interstate on-ramps are STILL amusing. And I get 1 more gear sorta! WIN!
