I never really have understood why people do a sprung seat with suspension.

with that close cropped photo how do we know the fool didn't hardtail it so it needs a sprung seat?
And anyone with an 85mph speedo swapped it out the moment they found a better one so it could well be a 1980.
Didn't the '79 between the gauges light panel have only one turn signal indicator light and that one has two?

thanks for the heads up on those photos.
So the seller is not an asinine hardtailer after all but someone with a misplaced enthusiasm.
For the same money and far less work he could have bought himself a Sportster
and left the XS1100 untouched.
