    Same size.

If you use square gauges, use the standard level gauge turned to face forward inside the special tank, not accurate but better than a kick in the balls.

If you use round special gauges, set the special's resistor turned to the bottom of the tank. Red light glows when level drops below.

It is a nice tank and the other parts I saw were great too. ...Sad....Thanks for the ideas on making it fit the special....I knew the vaccume lines would need attention, I'm making the seat....I'll get it done. T99 my girl is a sport bike junky, has already offered to buy me one....a big one.

To tell the truth I've know her since high school but it is one of the things that brought us together after my wife passed away. Just found a girl on a sport bike that could chew me up sexy as hell. She's even had it out to the drag strip.

Cool, that's an awesome story. You're one lucky guy. Enjoy the girl (and the tank...almost forgot what this thread was about. )

              Tank

That looks to be a 78 Macho Maroon color scheme. That would be the original color if it was not repainted.

Dale, it's a 1980 xs11 factory paint, the sides (inside the pin stripe) are just a little darker than the rest. It is the same color as the factory paint on my 1980 xs850........I think Yamaha called it new ruby red???? The 850.............

                    Color

Ok..kinda hard to tell from pictures. I have a 1980 Standard which is pretty close. I matched it as best I could.

I see 2 xs11's and what looks to be a v twin Honda either a 45 or v65. If I'm right, this was taken around 83-85.

Man Dale, do you have all the nice xs11s? That's one i'd love to have.....along with a 78 and the orange 79 special you have. But I thought the Macho Maroon was the color of the 78 standard only. I also really liked the 80 silver on silver paint, but I thought I'd have no chance at getting a good one of them. Have one of them too?

Yes you've dated that pic pretty well too, It was taken when I was in high school right in that time frame. The first bike is my buddy's 79 special beside it is my buddies best friend's 80 or 81 special and another old pal's non xs. I thought that 79 was one bad a** bike.

Yes my 78 was originally Macho Maroon. I painted it the color it is now because I was going to go with the old RD 350 color scheme but like the color so much I did not do the striping.
As for my 1980, I am considering selling it to finance a couple of other projects I'm working on. I have a 1980 Midnight Special I want to completely restore. It has low mileage but I think I bent a couple of valves cranking it so now I've got to do a valve job. I also picked up a Honda V65 Magna from a friend that needed money to move to Alaska so it's under restoration now (just came out of the paint shop as a matter of fact) and I picked it up cheap so I think I can flip it for a good profit. I just finished a 1982 Honda CBX 1000 and it is sweeeeeet. I'll post some pics later.
But back to the 80, it is probably the cleanest and best looking XS11 Standard I have seen and it only has about 9k miles on the clock. The pictures really dont do it justice! If you know someone that may be interested, send me a pm. I would rather sell to a fellow XSive than sell on ebay.
                          Cheers

                            Hi ruffrider,
like gloweVA sez, yes and no.
A complete Standard tank (tank + filler cap + fuel taps) drops straight on.
The Special's filler cap and fuel taps do NOT fit the Standard tank and the Standard tank's rheostat level sender won't work the Special's low fuel warning light.
Salvage the thermistor level sender from the Special's tank.
It will fit in the Standard tank but the hole is on t'other side of the tunnel so it has to fit backwards (wires pointing forward) or it will be upside down.
BTW, it still works upside down but the red light won't turn on until there's about a half-mile's worth of gas left in the reserve. The sender wiring will need to be extended.
I had to crop ~1/2" off my seat pan's nose, bend up a new flange around the cut edge and beat in a notch to clear the Standard tank's drain spigot.
The existing cover went back on OK to hide the hammer marks.
