  • Keyless Entry not so keyless

The back story, I have a 2002 Honda CRV. Keyless entry worked fine. It threw a code and I foud it was the evap vent solenoid. So, while under the car pulling the evap canister and replacing the solenoid I find a key taped to the rear suspension. I remove it, tried it in the door, it unlocks the door, tried it in the ignition it turned the ignition. Never did try to start it. Few weeks go by, I need to move the car and try this spare key I found. Well, it would not start with this key. Key turns, but starter will not engage. Get the key we have been using, and the car starts right up.

Now, ever since that attempt it seems, the keyless entry has been acting up. The FOB will lock and unlock every door except the drivers door. Drivers door has to be locked with the key. However, once it is locked with the key, the FOB only blinks the lights, no doors lock or unlock by the FOB. Once you unlock the drivers door with the key, all the other doors will lock or unlock by the FOB. Also, the drivers door lock will not push down form inside the car, has to be locked from the outside, this I figure is to prevent locking the keys in the car.

Once unlocked, the key starts the car just like normal.

So, I tried reprogramming the FOB to the car, no change. Are these unrelated coincidence? Or did the wrong key screw up the security system? Any ideas how to correct the issue?

Stabbing in the dark here, did you try using the original key to lock and unlock the drivers door.
Does that extra key you found have the chip in it ?
Will it start the car ?
Got to have the chip to start the engine !

      Thanks for the thoughts!

The second key does not have a remote and it must not be programmed for the car as it did not start the car.

Since then I have not used that key. All of the keyless entry issues I described are with the original key and its remote. What appears to have happened is that by using the second key that was not programmed, it somehow put the keyless entry in some kind of security lockdown mode. Maybe it is pure coincidence, but I am not a big proponent of coincidence.

Don, I would try surfing the Honda cage forums, I'm sure someone has had a similar problem. You may need a shop to reset the anti-theft, a lot of this information is not shared online, but for an older vehicle you may be able to find it. I always start with unhooking the battery for a short while to see if things reset. Good luck.

Edit: Yes it is possible the different key disturbed the anti-theft, it thinks someone is trying to steal the car, that's my thought.

          Hi Don,
I agree with Phil and was going to suggest the unhook the battery to see if it resets the computer. Damn security systems seem to cause the owner trouble while not even slowing down the thieving bastard.

Don... try unlocking the passenger door with the original key. Some manufacturers use the passenger lock as a re-set mechanism.

It may not work but, it's worth the try.

I spoke with the local Honda stealership, they told me this is a classic symptom of a failed door lock actuator. All the commands process through the drivers door lock, so when it is locked, it will not allow the others to unlock by the FOB. So, I have a new actuator on order. Another fun day working in the door panel of a car!

So was it using the non chipped key that affected the actuator into no longer functioning, needing to be replaced ?

I suppose that is all but impossible to tell for sure. My guess is it was just coincidental of the timing. Since my 19 yo daughter drives the car, I am relying on when she told me about it as to when the symptom developed.

The non chipped key is the only thing I could think of that would cause such an issue. I had not considered a failed actuator would effect how ALL the doors and the horn beeps react to the FOB.

Well, disconnecting the battery did not fix it. I got a replacement lock actuator for the drivers door, and that cured it. So it was just coincidental it happened the same time as me trying the wrong key.

                      Door

                      If it helps:
I can not open the passenger door of my 78 Chev truck.
The key mechanism, or the pull up and down pin thing has jammed.
I hate this modern over complicated stuff.
Think I will go for a drive on my 41 Ford tractor, oh wait, the starter quit working. Only lasted 70 years, darn.

Hey, no problem, you can get parts at the farm store and rebuild it. You can probably take it out without removing any other part. CZ
