After he first contacted me I decided to look on the Virginia DMV website and found that it was still in my name. Im military and I lived in VA and the bike was titled in VA at the time that I got rid of it. I ordered a replacement title. I was original thinking of really working with this guy but the more that I talk to him the worse I think that there is something up.

Today from 0530 to 1200 when i was able to check my phone this guy sent me 17 long texts about how I should man up and give him the title. and that his sisters husband was a police officer in Chesapeake and that He has an attorney. I told him that I didnt care about that and that I wanted to work with him but the original person that I got it from would have to contact me to get the title. He told me that they were going to go to disneyland all next week and couldnt do it but maybe he could have them call me to settle this. I told him I wanted it face to face so the original owner know the story im told and if its true. After that was when the price dropped to 2k,

Ive thought about possible repo of the bike but im not sure how to go about that. I dont know the address all i have right now is the number and a pic of the guy. I also open admit even to him that I did get rid of this bike before and signed the title to the guy that I got rid of it to. Its really about that im not liable for this any more. If i can get it back thats fine but if this guy really bought it and actually lost the title thats fine too but he cant prove that he bought it really. He said that he had a bill of sale from the original guy that got it from me but has failed to produce it,

I just dont want to get it back or "buy" it back from this guy and then get sued from the first guy that I got rid of it to. Im not sure how that works but Im just trying to think of all the options.

    Sorry for the rant. lol.

    Thanks for the inputs guys.

Yeah, there's something up all right.... This smells pretty bad; first, why didn't whoever bought the bike from you transfer title? And why doesn't this knucklehead have the title?

I think at this point, I'd get the new title and then call the cops. Tell them you think it might be stolen and give them his phone number. Worst case, you have to give up the title; best case, you get the bike back for free (or impound fees) and these two bozos go to jail for whatever scam they're running...

I can think of one reason why the never transfer the title and re-register it, Money.
With the antique tags on it, (originally CP's) there's no need for renewing the plates and there's no requirement for yearly inspections, so as long as they never got pulled over and had to produce a registration with their name on it, then they wouldn't have a need to do all that paperwork at the DMV, and pay the money too.

          You said:
The people that got it from me called me the next day and asked if i had taken the keys which I had not.
So, have you talked to the people you sold it too?

          Is this the CL listing?

I'm with Steve on this one,My family has been in law enforcement for many years, and this does not sound good.I would either call police and inform them of the situation or go to motor vehicles office and show them texts and your title for the bike, let them figure it out.Police would be my first choice though, motor vehicle office generally gives you the run around unless you know someone in the office.Good luck.

If i could contact the other folks that would settle it. That s what i asked him to do. I had a cop come by and he told me it didn't concern me i. I no longer had anything to do with it since i signed the title. Im not sure he uunderstood everything that was up. He didn't seem to interested. He referred me to the dmv.

Even if you signed the title, if it was not legally transferred to the new owner it is still registered to you and you are still legally liable (sort of) for it. It does concern you.

No 'sort of' about it; you are legally liable for that bike. I'd try going to a police station, if still no help there then I'd gather a few buddies and go take the bike. Maybe then the guy will do what it takes to prove ownership...

How about checking your phone bill, (or online statement) they most of the time list all incoming and outgoing calls. If you can narrow it down to the day/week then eliminate all other known numbers, then what's left should be their number.

I say sort of because if you can prove that you have sold it to another party (dates are a big part of this) you can be released from any liability but you NEED to be able to prove that.

With all the hassle and drama involved in this, it is no wonder it is hard to get PO's to get a title for new owners.
I would re-try the cops and completely refuse to do anything further unless the one wanting the title produced what is needed. If he really is a lawyer and he has a cop to check with he would already know this stuff.
Up here titles are as foreign as Martians as all we need is a bill of sale. I have even seen an employee of the registration office sign one so a fellow could register his truck. Once the VIN is registered it gets checked out with stolen stuff and the cops are notified if it was stolen. Other than that no hassles.
If it was stolen, they impound the vehicle and as a buyer you are shat out of luck too. If the previous owner was paid out by his insurance, you have a real good chance of him signing it over to you for the cost of his time.

Go to the police station. Ask to speak to somebody in the fraud squad, not a regular beat cop. They don't know squat. Make sure you speak to someone who knows what they're talking about, and is interested in this.

In NJ you have a week to transfer title in your name. If you don't they hit you with a tremendous fee that rises exponentially as time goes passed the one week mark. And that's on top of the normal titling fee, out of state title transfer if required, registration and tax. Titling and registering a bike (or car)in NJ is like buying said vehicle all over again, lol.

However, most NJ residents, when we sell something we leave the date on the title blank...and the price...to help the buyer out. I suppose that could come back to bite us in the a$$ in an instance like this though.

He knows cops and has a lawyer, and will be unavailable in Disney World, yet is dropping the price and still contacting you himself? I call BS on all of that. Scammers try to make you think they are powerful and unavailable to get you to do their bidding (no pun intended). Keep out of it or let the DMV know what's going on.
