Cost of title +$60 for your time and effort.

Look at it this way, that $100 bucks or so is the difference between him makng a couple thousand or not.

Interesting situation. How long ago did you sell him the bike?

That title changes the value of the bike DRASTICALLY. Now, was the guy a nice person when you sold it to him? Has he been nice discussing selling it back to you? How long ago did you sell it, has he been using your registration to ride it?

Figure your hourly rate at work, make it over time rate. Guess two hours for the title work + the fee the state will charge you. There is the fee.

Yeah, that's the big question. If he needs you to get a replacement title, he's all but admitted he never transferred title, so you have been legally liable all this time.

Legally, unless he still has whatever sale documents you gave him still in his possession, you could maybe get a new title and 'repossess' the bike back from him for no money. I'd be a bit pissed, and would bend the guy over at least a little....

Some of you may have heard this story from me before, but I went through a similar issue with a car I sold that turned VERY VERY ugly.

I get a call from the guy who bought the car 8 months after the sale, he needs a new title. Says he never drove it as the engine blew up two days after he bought it. Just happened to be the month our registration expired. I tell him he is out of luck at first. He calls several times, I tell him for $200 I'll get his title, he gets pissed, I tell him I'll go get the title and ask the po-po to look for my stolen car, I think I know where it might be. He agrees to pay.

Well, turned out the guy who bought the car, and his girl friend were driving around on our plates for almost a year, selling drugs with the car. Local LEO had them under surveillance and arrested him, and impounded the car. Turns out in the end he was calling me from the slammer to get the new title. In the mean time the LEOs called to "discuss" the issue with my wife, the registered owner, they thought might be the girl friend. Ended up I got the title, signed it over to the guy who bought it, then handed it over to LEO. LEO wanted me to sign the car over to them, I said HE!! NO!!! I wanted no record they took the car from us. And yes, I made sure the guy was LEO and not one of dipsh!ts buddies posing.

So yeah, it can get really ugly.

Washington state now has a requirement that title be transferred within 15 days of sale, and to help with that they have a form the 'old' owner sends in. Now, if the vehicle isn't currently licensed I don't worry about that as the new owner can't get tabs until the title is transferred. But after Seattle tried to collect on some parking tickets on a operable car I sold, I make sure that gets done....

yeah the bike has my old antique plates on it. I told the guy if his story was correct then have the people that I sold it to contact me and maybe I can work with them to get them a title and we would go to the dmv and do the transfer there so I know its out of my name. other wise how do I know if he stole it or not. The people that got it from me called me the next day and asked if i had taken the keys which I had not. Thats the last Ive heard of him and no one has called me. It just seems fishy.

In some states the plates are registered to the vehicle, in other states to the owner. I've lived and sold vehicles in both types of registration. Prefer registered to person, as that way I can (and do) pull the plates before the vehicle leaves my house. New owner gets a dated bill of sale and I date the signature line on the back of the title as well. It is up to them to get new plates within 30 days or get pulled over for not having any.

In states where the plates go with the vehicle (Oregon comes to mind) I called the DMV, gave them the plate number and VIN, and informed them of the sale, date, and new owner's name. Not strictly official but the DMV will note the account so if the new owner gets stopped for any reason the DMV is aware the transaction took place.

I have not lived in Oregon since 1990 and do not know if the plates still go with the car, so this anecdote may no longer apply.

In Wisconsin, again many years ago, you kept the plates and could assign the old plates to a new / different vehicle or apply for a partial refund of the registration, another reason to keep the old plates.

So now the guy texts me that Im making this so difficult on him he is lowering his asking price down to 2000. This guy still hasn't had the previous owners contact me. I told him that if they did and everybody's story matched then we could settle for my time. He obviously knows enough to know who the people were. I was talking to a co worker and he said that the guy may have stole it and contact me back fishing if it was in my name. If i had the the cash i would.lol. Hmm wonder what the 850 would sell for? Lol

Hell, you might tell him that you would pay $1000, and that only after you got to do a mechanical inspection.

Be careful, Do you know for certain it is still in your name? Did you sell it out of state?

Receiving stolen property is a crime in most states, and he seems pretty desperate to dump it. I may be overly skeptical but, experience has taught me to plan for the worst, and expert even less when things seem this fishy.

Granted, there are more than a few folks who have bought these bikes and come on here in the same boat as this guy seems to be. Bought the bike, PO never had the title and won't work with them to get it. Makes a decent bike a parts bike. But don't overlook the possibility you could end up in a bad spot. No reason he should not let you contact the PO he got the bike from. You would recall the name if it was who you sold it to.
