I have a DVD player that doesn't always work so I ordered my first DVD recorder. Do I use DVD R or DVD RW to record TV shows? Without getting to technical because I won't understand, what is each used for and what is the + and -. Is + record and - play? Thanks RB

DVD-RW re-writable is a waste of time IMHO, the R one time disks are far more dependable and are inexpensive. As for the + or -, check your owners manual, it will tell you which one is compatible with your unit.

OK, it says it will use both + & -. So do I understand you correctly, the R is a one time record, I can not record over the old "show" repeatedly? I am looking for something I can record stuff on repeatedly. ie: record this show/event tonight, in a couple days record something else on or over what I previously recorded. A RW disc can be recorded over, but it's not as simple as a VCR. While a tape can just be recorded over, a CD-RW or DVD-RW needs to be erased first, a separate step. There's even two ways to do that; full erasure (slow process), or just remove the 'table of contents' info (fast) but the latter leaves 'stuff' behind that can degrade new recording. The discs do go bad if recorded over a lot.
A TiVo or similar machine would be a better choice....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Basically the same amount of time that you recorded on the disc, sometimes less. That can vary between disc drives; I've seen some that can erase 2 minutes in 1 minute, but for some it's a 1 for 1 ratio.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Don't be surprised if the discs fail fairly quickly. While they're 'rewritable', I've seen some go bad in as few as ten sessions, others last for months. And you won't always know they're bad until you try to record on them...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
