    Hey folks,

Was thinking recently, and wanted to see what others would say/add to this question.

What are the songs you HATE to hear come over the radio! If you want to add the "WHY", that's cool, too! Here's my short list so far!
    • Tempted: Squeeze
    • The Boys are Back: Thin Lizzy
    • Blinded by the Light: Manfred Mann/Earth Band
    • Angel is a Centerfold: J. Geils Band

I'm a Classic Rocker being a baby boomer, but these songs just grate my nerve for various reasons...."POP" content, lousy melody, lyrics, etc.!

Curious to see what drives you all nuts!

    T.C.
    T. C. Gresham
    81SH "Godzilla" . . .1179cc super-rat.
    79SF "The Teacher" . . .basket case!
    History shows again and again,
How nature points out the folly of men!

I grew up listening to allot of the Grand Ole Opry stuff, Roy Acuff, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams,Chet Atkins. And then a little "cutting edge" stuff like Elvis, Waylon and Willie. Motown is also great stuff, the Four Tops, Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye. I also listened to all the "new" stuff like Air Supply, Joe Walsh, Rush, Boston, ELO, Moody Blues,... I do like all kinds of music even rap music now and then.

The one type I have always hated is the "hair band" screamer type stuff. Quiot Riot test my nerves, get any more hard core "heavy metal" and you lose my interest. If I want to get screamed at I will walk into the living room with my garage shoes on. The one exception is of course ACDC. I also hate the rap stuff that is more just one person swearing every other word stuff, and the music is strictly the back beat to them pissing and moaning about how the world is out to get them.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

For me, it depends. Just about anything off 'Dark Side of the Moon' anymore because it's been played to death. J. Geils, yeah, I never did see how they got famous. Guns n' Roses never did much for me either. Speed metal, can't tell any of them apart. Big problem is so many radio stations these days seem to have very limited playlists; listen to them for a week and you've pretty much heard it all...

Have sat radio in the new car, but it sucks even worse; I dropped it after the 'free trial' period. Lots of weird tracks mixed in (which isn't always bad), but whoever does their programming should be shot as the 'flow' between songs is gawdawful, it's like they're picking songs at random.

If I can ever figure out how to make flash drives work in the car, I'll probably quit listening to radio...

Did go out for live music tonight; the opening act was the 'Graceland Five', a very bizarre speed metal/Elvis combo (I'm not kidding! the lead singer was dressed as Vegas Elvis!?!) followed by a all-girl AC/DC tribute band ('Hell's Belles') who were pretty damn good. The lead guitarist threw her hair around so much I was waiting for her head to fly off...

In Canada, rock radio stations are forced to play 35% of Canadian content music. In saying that Canadian music tends to be played too repetitiously.

        Here is a few Canadian songs over played;

        1) American Woman- The Guess Who
        2) Poets- The Tragically Hip
        3) Patio Lanterns- Kim Mitchell
        4) Boys in the Bright White Sports Car- Trooper
        5) Signs- Five Man Electrical Band
        6) Anything by Loverboy. That's not a song. Just anything by this band is grating.
If I never hear these songs again, it will be too soon.

        International Songs:

        1) The Ocean- Led Zeppelin
        2) I Was Made for Loving You Baby- Kiss
        3) Mama- Genesis (Anything by Phil Collins)
        4) Heartache Tonight- The Eagles
        5) Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution- AC/DC
        6) Back in Black-AC/DC

This is a short list. These songs have me reaching for the volume faster than a coiled up rattle snake.

Any whiney country music and absolutely ANY rap will get me diving for an adjustment on the control knobs.

I live on 70s and 80 classic rock. Country music makes me feel suicidal and rap just pisses me off.

I'm mostly into classic rock but can't stand Ozzy, never could stand his whiney voice... "I can't drive 55", a good rockin' tune, but the lyrics?... "Lights" by Journey, another one that churns my guts.

                  Hi Greg,
but you must admit that Country singers were the first to comply with the truth in advertizing rules, some of them even changed their names.

Opera, techno pop or fake computer crap, rap, punk rock, grunge rock.

What I do enjoy is classic, southern, country rock and blues. The one country singer that I am sick of is Taylor Swift with her dumbass high school boyfriend songs. It might have been cute once when she was 16 but it's been over done and I'm reaching to turn the station asap. I call it teeny bopper country. Makes me wonder if she will still be doing it when she's 60.

                        Music

NO Rap or sugar pop here. Some country is good, I tend to like the older country standards cuz I like the stories. The newer country doesn't fit my ear well. I'll put on opera sometimes in the shop, there IS some good opera. I'm listening to a lot of blues lately but I tend to gravitate to the "wall of sound" blues. I like the big band swing effect with brass sections and the stand up bass, piano etc. The singers use their voice as another instrument, don't just sing words like most of them today.
I like to put bluegrass on to get me started in the mornings when I first head over to the shop.
In the summer I get up early to watch the stars go down and I put Bach on and sit out on the deck. The deer come out of the bush and will walk right up to the deck and listen and graze on my septic field. I've tried other music but they only come over with the bach. Strange that they have a preference.
I've found that all classic rock stations over play most top ten songs of that era. early 60-79. I don't remember too many reall good songs from the 80"s. It was kind of a dead spot, disco came in and the just make money pop started. 80's and 90's hair bands and heavy metal flash rock did little for me.

                          Fred sez.. Hi Steve,
                          how can you say that?
Push enough buttons and there's bound to be something you like.
                          Easy; it does suck....

Several people told me I'd like it, so that made my disappointment only larger. And the 'All Whoever, all the time' channels sucked too. Very few artists recorded 100% gems and a lot of material isn't usually played for a reason; because it's not that good. Even on the 'mixed artist' channels, there's too many 'also-ran' tracks played. Their programmers don't seem to know that...

The other issue with sat radio came as a complete surprise; it suffers from 'tree fade'. I live in the country, and most local roads that I travel are heavily tree-lined. It seems that trees can block line-of-sight reception, so the radio is constantly fading in-and-out on many roads, a major irritation. If you live somewhere with fewer trees or at a lower latitude (more 'under' the satellite) it's probably not a problem but it is here. And western Washington state isn't all that 'flat' either, so I've gotten fade even where there isn't any trees by getting into 'terrain shadows'. That's more common than you'd think...

Bottom line, between the jarring programming and too-often poor reception, this just wasn't something worth paying $15+ a month for. I'm also in a major radio market (I can pick up most Seattle stations) so it's not like I don't have other choices, and those are free.

If you live somewhere with few station choices and don't have the reception issues, I can see that this could be a viable alternative. My son-in-law lives in eastern Washington and loves his satellite radio, but the land is flat, there's almost no trees, and there's only about three radio stations (whose morning programming consists of farm reports) so his 'like' bar is set a lot lower, so there you go....

Ah, WTH, I'll list my 'favs' too....

I'm a child of the 60s, so my 'roots' are firmly there. I like most of the 'big' names like Led Zep, The Who, Moody blues (particular fav), most Floyd (but not all), the Beatles of course, Springsteen, Hendrix, most Clapton, etc, etc.

But there's a lot of groups that get very limited airplay these days if any (and even then, only certain songs) like Procul Harem, Ten Years After, Jethro Tull, Steve Miller (his first 5 albums are far better than his later stuff IMO), The Byrds, Yardbirds, John Mayall, Savoy Brown, Youngbloods, Jeff Beck, Them (early Van Morrison), Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Animals (I still love their version of 'CC Rider' the best), the Kinks (besides 'Lola'), Johnny Winter (especially live! Yeah!), Spirit (first two albums which you never hear are great!), It's A Beautiful Day (excellent first album, not one bad song), Jefferson Airplane (besides 'White Rabbit'), early Fleetwood Mac (minus the chicks; I've got a semi-bootleg live version of 'Oh Well' that will blow your socks off!), Country Joe & the Fish ('Electric Music for the Mind and Body' is still one of the best acid-rock albums ever), Tommy James & the Shondells. Big fan of the Grateful Dead (when the band was 'on', their live shows could be transcendent!!), so you what I was doing in those days....

Then there's the more obscure groups and/or one-hit-wonders; the Standells, Billy Thorpe, New Riders of the Purple Sage (semi-country filtered through the Grateful Dead/Jefferson Airplane, before they went 'novelty'. Although their country send-up 'Redneck Mother' is a very funny counterpoint to Merle Haggard's 'Proud to be a Okie' song... LOLOL!!!), Jefferson Starship (before they became just 'Starship'), Zephr, Commander Cody & the Lost Planet Airmen, Butterfield Blues Band ('East-West' should be a 'must have' if you like blues), Tommy Bolin, Al Stewart, Dave Mason, Buffalo Springfield, Traffic, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Hollies, Mitch Ryder, U.F.O., a lot of groups you'll almost never hear on radio. Don't forget the 'surf' groups like Jan & Dean, Chantays, Surfaris...

Newer stuff; U2, INXS, Bush, Pretenders, Del-Lords, Offspring, The Call (their first album is excellent, not one bad song), the Clash, many of the 'grunge' groups like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Candlebox, Everclear.

I've also chased after the local sounds of my youth. Local groups like the Sonics, Kingsmen (of 'Louie, Louie' fame), Merrilee and the Turnabouts (AKA Merrilee Rush after her one hit LOL!), The Viceroys, Don and the Goodtimes (a offshoot of the Kingsmen; when the Kingsmen went on tour for 'Louie, Louie', their drummer couldn't go, his parents wouldn't give permission and he was under age! He formed this group when they left...), and of course Paul Revere and the Raiders. These guys played the dances when I was in junior high/high school....

Not at all a fan of country; it's either too whiney or sounds like bad rock on downers. Just my opinion..... Didn't care for any of the 'hair' bands either, and who in the hell can listen to rap/hip hop? That's not even music IMO.

I like some classical; Bach is good, but I'm partial to Vivaldi. Have to be in the mood though...
