Music/women

Hi Fred, music,women,cars,bikes,food. We all have different likes and tastes. I myself like her appearence, I wish all women would dress like that. I suppose I was born twenty years too late. It is simple and quirky music and thats also part of why I like it at times. Great to put on for working out.

I decided to RE-check out Steve Miller's Early work, although I remember getting his SAILOR album just to see IF I liked what he had done prior to his Book of Dreams stuff. I used iTunes to sample his first 5 albums, sorry but I wasn't impressed at all...I don't like his VOICE much to begin with, and didn't find any of the songs entertaining...the instrumentation was too early 60's style. I'll work on your later top 10 list to see how they sound.

Mack, I think we can just turn this thread into a free for all discussion of what music we like, what rare tracks we think others might like, etc.!

Steve, nice to see Grand Funk Railroad in your earlier reply...I was 14 y/o when I really became interested in music...Rock music especially, and they were the first group to catch my ear. I bought their later compilation album...the black double one simply called Mark, Don, Mel! I'm not much into remembering the names of the individual artists within a specific band, but I remember them! I know they were characterized as a bit of a country rock...at least with Mark's vocals...but some of the non-air tracks I like are "Inside Looking Out"; "Time Machine", "Into the Sun", "Paranoid", and especially their version of "Feelin' Alright", vs.Joe Cocker's....moreso for the rockier instrumentation.

Mack and Steve, growing up I thought Linda Ronstadt was "HOT", and she was in the 70's, I think she has a great voice, had a great early backing group the Stone Poneys...aka the Eagles!

Pat Benetar was another one that I thought had a great voice, and a rare non-hit track from her Crimes of Passion album, "I'm gonna follow you" just hits me with both her sultry voice, and slow rythmic song beat, with guitar accents.

Talking about older classic rock artists...EARLY Chicago....I'm sure lots of folks don't realize that they were a great rockin' rock group that just happened to also have a great horn section! Their first album has several deep cuts: "Questions 67 & 68", "Listen", "Poem 58", "South California Purples", and again a cover of a song......"I'm a Man", which I think is much better that Steve Winwood's/Spencer Davis Group version JMHO!

Miller's first two albums are pretty mellow; they're great 'traveling music' if you're out for nice drive, or late at night. And it's not so much that there's any particular 'standout' songs, it's more that the album fits together well as a 'whole'. His third rocks more ('Space Cowboy' and 'Kow Kow Kowculator'), the fourth is ballad-heavy ('Baby's house' is one of my all-time fav songs), the fifth he's starting to rock more ('Going to Mexico', 'Jackson-Kent Blues', 'Industrial Military Complex Hex'). Vocals/lyrics were never his strong suit, but he had such a 'smooth' guitar style on his early albums that I liked. Hey, I was usually in low earth orbit when listening to these, it might be a 'had to be there' thing... 'Take Off to Orbit' was usually to something a little harder rockin'...

The first Chicago album is a killer. It's actually their only album I have, as the later ones got too 'pop' for me. One bit of trivia; the first album was titled 'Chicago Transit Authority', but they were sued by the actual public entity of that name, so dropped the 'transit authority' after the first one....

I will say my listening habits are still 'old school' to a large degree. I don't have a I-pod (and ain't getting one....) so I like to put a complete album on and listen to the whole thing. So how well an album 'flows' with enough difference in the songs so it doesn't all sound the same is important to me. I have put together some 'playlist' CDs, but it's so time consuming....

I sometimes miss my 7" reel tapes. I could get six album sides on a tape (3 single-disc albums, about 2 hrs), I'd spend time 'matching' albums for a 'good flow', after 2 hrs it was easy to change tempo with a different tape....

Steve, your mention of reel to reels got me thinking. I had a HiFi VHS player in the early eighties and I taped a bunch of stuff on that. Each tape gave you 8 hrs of listening and video. I forgot all about them. Music video's were new back then and I recorded some pretty good stuff. I'll have to start looking through boxes and stuff to see if I can find the tapes and the player.
Do you remember waaaaay back, Chet Atkins and Les Paul had a weekly show called "chester & lester" and they used to sit on stools on a stage and try to out do each other? After that one Chet Atkins had his own weekly show called "In Session", where he would invite all the best guitarists from all genre's on and they would do songs together? I know I have a few of those taped. One with Mark Knopher and another with Liona Boyd for sure.
Geez I'd kill to be able to buy a complete set of those two shows. He was such a consumate guitarist and so versitile. I remember one and I think it was marshall Tucker band was performing, and the guitar player was putting on quite a show, working real hard and sweating up a storm. When it was Chet's turn he just stood still with that smile on his face and let his fingers do the work. He was faster, cleaner and far more polished. I've got a few of his records but they aren't as good as his stage performances.

Spanish Guitar

TC: For Spanish/flaminco gutarist there are quite a few and the style changes a bit with where they come from. Much like all genre's. If your looking for something to put on for background music for dinner parties etc. I'd recommend "Ottmar Liebert". He is good but can be repetative so you may want to start with a "best of" CD.
If your looking for a mediterranean flare, real fast and clean, very polished I'd say "Strunz & Farah" would be the best place to start. They have a gezzilion CD's out but start with "mosaico" or "Americas". Another good one but a little different, bit more laid back and features other instuments as well is "Stringweave". I like it a lot, but I'm always looking for something out of the box in all genre's. Flaminco violin was something I hadn't heard before.
If your looking for some spanish guitar that makes you want to dance (not often for me), there is a good US band called" Incendio". From LA I think. Not quite as polished as the others, but has a great progressive beat to it that is very infectious.
If your looking for just a basic classical guitarist, one of the best is Don Ross. Can't go wrong buying anything he has put out.
Another you might consider is a guy called John Williams. He's sort of the Micheal Bolton of classical guitar players. Never does anything original but is very good at copying other peoples work. If you want to hear one of your favorite songs done on a classical guitar, anything from micheal Jackson to ZZ top. he's the guy.

Thanks, but SWMBO already introduced me to Ottmar, his "Hours between night and day" is my favorite...like the whole album/CD, and recently his DUNE, I listened to several of his other albums, a few songs struck my fancy, but he was trying out different styles and such, but he's come back closer to his Night/Day style with Dune.

I have my MP3 player in my exam room, I like to play instrumental stuff while working, gives me music without the distraction of lyrics while with patients. A majority of them are the 65+Y/o group, so the easily listening stuff is what I prefer during work hours. I've found a modest collection of Flamenco styled modern songs on iTunes fairly cheaply....MUZAK so to speak....but I've also found some of the traditional Spanish or latin songs that I vaguely remember hearing like Malaguena, Guantanamera, Mas que Nada, Perfidia, and such...iTunes artist Salsa Rosso for these.

Surprisingly one album/CD I found in the cheap bin was called Guitar Recital by Jason Vieaux, it's Spanish Classical music I think...it's written in spanish, but I like it alot. You mentioned John Williams, I have him with Andres Segovia on another Guitar Classics....a bunch of BACH stuff, but I don't like it as much...again due to a lot of just what sounds to me like random riffs but not much in the way of melodies to follow!

Speaking of Spanish classical guitar style....a few years ago when we still had a SMOOTH JAZZ radio station, I heard a song that was part of a soundtrack of an offbeat no-hit movie called Curdled.....and the artist was SLASH from GNR, but it is a beautiful melodic spanish flavored piece called Obsession/Confession....have you heard it?! You might consider it modern latin fluff, but I liked it the first time I heard it.

Found it in my collection, got it from a friend's computer I fixed...artist Jose` Luis Encinas: Album DUENDE: tracks:Asturias XXI; Desert; Gate of Mystery, Luna de Fiesta; Mercuriana; Night in the South; Pegasus; Sad Metropolis; Shadows in blue; Night music from streets of Madrid....I like this one very much also.

I'll check out Stringweave, and also Don Ross, and will look for John William's covers of modern songs...but I also have found a similar thing on iTunes with Flamenco Guitar Classics, and 60's Guitar Music, etc.!
