80 SG Ol' Okie;79 engine & carbs w/pods, 45 pilots, 140 mains, Custom Mac 4 into 2 exhaust, ACCT,XS850 final drive,110/90/19 front tire,TKat fork brace, XS750 140 MPH speedometer, Vetter IV fairing, aftermarket hard bags and trunk, LG high back seat, XJ rear shocks.

Good thinking DAV...I could see it would for a pot handle..grab the loop handle and pull the pot off the fire

When we lived in Newburgh, NY in 1969 the kitchen stove was ANCIENT, it had been converted from woodburning to natural gas. It had the round plates covering the burners, which you had to remove so you could light the stove. Man, it was like time travel. Anyway we had something like that thing to remove the plates and open the oven door and flue.Former owner, but I have NO PARTS LEFT!Comment

1 more guess for me, as you say your dad did his own engine work.
valve compresser? Spring part fits on cam (some sort of way) and notch contacts the valve stem. Pull up and you can remove the keepers.Comment

Here's my final answer:
It’s an old pin spanner wrench that was custom made for a specific purpose. The clip would allow it to be held in place while making fine adjustments to something while a jam nut would be used to lock the assembly in place when everything is just right and then the spanner would be removed and put away until the next time it is needed.1980 XS850SG - Sold
