  • pine sap removal?

I just did a search on pine pitch removal on paint, none came up. So,any idea's how to safely remove pine sap from car paint or our bikes paint? We do alot of camping, and it's hardened on my wifes Camry.I have found people using everything from rubbing alcohol to peantbutter, with different results. What have you guys and ladies used, and what were the results? I used rubbing alcohol before, results were ok,took a long time to soften it up,was labor intensive, and left a white residue, even after washing the area.

My Suburban was drenched in fresh sap after a camping trip, and spraying it with WD40, letting it soak a bit, and then scrubbing it off worked for me. Test it on a small area, and if you screw up, it's on you, but it worked for me. I used a plastic scraper to get the big hunks and a towel with WD40 to buff it up.

ok,so I just tried something one person on the internet said to do,seemed strange to me,and nobody else even mentioned it,so I figured, what the hay.You take Johnsons Baby Lotion, put a dab on the sap, rubbing it on,let sit for a few minutes, then I rubbed with my finger ,scraping at the sap until it comes off,I then used a clean dry cloth to rub off the lotion, and it was clean.I did this on several small spots and a couple large thick spots.on the large ones,I had to use my finger nail to get the thick stuff off,but after several minutes of the lotion sitting on the sap,it softened up and came right off.A few spots I had to repeat.I don't know if there will be any adverse effects on the paint or clear coat,so do this at your own risk.I find it hard to believe there could be any harm to the finish of my car,but I guess we'll see.

LoHo,I have used WD40,was a lot of manual labor.. The Johnson baby lotion worked almost effortlessly. And it smells good too.

I hear ammonia works well, but was to chicken to use it on the wifes car. I heard that Goo be gone stuff doesn't work well on pine pitch, although they said it works for tape, don't understand that one.

What ever you use/try the sooner you get it off the better. Like bird poop it attacks the paint and leaves a stain after just a short time. i have used the alcohol with slow success. The oil sounds like a better solution.

I would be very careful about using rubbing alcohol, I think the white residue left behind was your clear coat being damaged. I would say the same for ammonia but haven't much expirence with it. I like the baby oil idea, sound easy on the clear coat type of thing. For the bigger, thicker spots just leave it on a little longer.

Try citrol, I think its some of the best cleaner on the market. It's great for a lot of things and right up there with Seafoam as a must have in the garage or shop.

                        hope this helps

just grabbed these off the internet!me things you can use to remove tree sap from your car.

Nail polish remover Pour some nail polish remover onto a cotton ball and wipe it on the sap. The sap should come right off. After it's removed, wash away any residue with a paste of baking soda and water.
Mineral spirit Dampen a soft cloth with mineral spirit (turpentine). Rub the cloth on the sap, and the sap should come off. After it's removed, wash the area with water.
Lighter fluid/rubbing alcohol/bacon grease/WD-40 Place any one of these on the sap and leave it there for a while. It will get to work dissolving the tree sap. When you notice the dissolution, rub off the remaining sap [source: Browh, WD-40].

Pine-Sol (pine oil) for pine sap?
I just cleaned a pile of bolts with it with great success.

Stay away from the nail polish remover; they are often acetone based, and will remove just about any petroleum based thing it encounters, like clear coat and paint.

I'll have to give the baby oil idea a try. It would be good for cleaning up pitch that one gets on their hands or skin.

+1 on the nail polish, you have to be very careful with this stuff, will ruin your clear coat in a hurry.I was really impressed with the baby lotion,no spots on the trunk of the car,and ooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh sooooooooooo softtttttttttttttt. By the way,I don't know if it matters, but it was Johnson's baby lotion, not baby oil.
