xs650 or xs1100???

the numbers are off of the Frame neck (# on the first post)and motor im thinking it may be a shady deal if you know what i mean. i just need to know due to parts reasons. i picked it up in a trade for a laptop and have always loved the midnight's. but i do have title which has that same number.

what does the title say it is?

seeeeee, and it's not the local Leo's but the state cops who are pretty knowledgeable in this area as they do regular vehicle inspections, not just commercial, and you never know who might be a MC enthusiast.

Well, may as well and jump in on the guess'in. Looks like he's got a 79Special......why 79?.....can't be 81(no slotted rotors and no black circle recesses in side covers, and alot more). Not an 80Special(no slotted rotors again, and alot more). See it does have the Jardine 'sketti' pipes........and Jardine muffs. A 79Special it is......and I'm stickin' to it.

Then it has the wrong frame, 79's didn't have the front frame mounted reflectors

It could be done in Ohio. Again, not saying it has happened on this bike.

But....if you wanted to say file down the downtube to eliminate the stamped numbers and then use a good punch set to re-stamp the numbers to match a title you have....well...how many LEOs know the difference between an XS1100 and an XS650 or an XJ650? In Ohio, engine numbers are never checked when you bring in a vehicle from out of state, let alone in state checks.

My best guess is there is some dirt or debris on the VIN that makes it look like 2FO instead of 4RO. The 2FO is an XS650 VIN, but that is not an XS650 or an XJ650.

Worst case scenario is someone altered the VIN as they only had a title to an XS650.

You'd never get away with that in Ohio, you might be able to mix and match same cc frames but the Ohio State patrol does random inspections on bikes ( a lot of theft here) and they go over every detail on registration and vins and such, likely to get a bike confiscated. It's one thing to put a motor from one bike into another frame, but not try and pass off a bike as a whole other animal. Not saying any of this was done, just commenting on the possibility.

The frame has been painted a grey looking color, otherwise it is mostly correct except the seat and side covers.

The motor at first glance looks like an 1100 to me, possibly with a hodge podge of other parts mixed on the bike, franken-cycle??

His bike is an XS1100. 80 or 81 Special from looking at it. I am guessing 81 since it has the reflectors on the frame. So the VIN should start off 4RO. Perhaps a little cleaning and closer inspection is in order?

Kings, look at the down tube of the frame, on the right hand side. There will be numbers stamped into the frame that will give you the VIN. Not sure where your looking on the engine though to get the VIN you have.
