I'm so sorry to hear of your travail. You have a lot on your plate. Tales like yours make me less inclined to feel sorry for myself and my relatively insignificant woes. I stayed 2 weeks on Manhattan island 9 months ago to welcome my first grandchild into the world, so I got a very good picture of that part of the world. My heart goes out to all of those affected by Sandy, but to return from a tour of duty and be hit... Thank you for your service! Wish I could help.

Old bikers never die, they're just out of sight!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
    I've been riding since 1959.

      Finally getting some time

I am starting with the 81 it is in the worst shape

Removed and drained the tank It was full I just filled it up not much sea water It looks good

I got the carbs off a big mess going to start the rebuild

Blew out the oil from the cyls had the same gunk as the carbs filled with oil again

Drained gearboxes and filled again with oil

      Air box off and drying

      Going to pull the starter

Any thoughts on removing the head? I was going to take off the valve cover and see how that looks?

      The battery is fried
Dont know where to begin just plugging away[IMG][/IMG]

        Carbs in the bath

Carbs are apart and in a pinesol bath. The slides were rough to get out I needed a crow bar . The diaphrams look good the floats are ok I have not removed any jets ot the emulsion tubes yet Thought I would let them soak a few days. Nothing like an impact driver

Hey East, thanks for putting in your time on our behalf overseas! As former groundpounder, I feel for your situation. Being gone during the storm, and then coming back just in time to deal with the aftermath!

As to the bikes, I would say to tackle it like any other rebuild. Start at one end, and work your way to the other. For you, since you unsure of the engine, you may want to start there. I would start by getting a compression check. Then maybe pull the head off depending what that tells you. I would put some MMO or tranny fluid or similar in each cylinder and let it soak for a few days before running the compression check.

From there, all you can do is go one piece, one system at a time and check, clean and or adjust each part as you go.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.
