Depends on what you have to add. If you're just saying, "This thread helped me", you should probably not post in a year-old thread. However, if you have a question or additional information that is related to the thread, to clarify something, I'd say there is no limit. That's why everything is saved, so it will help someone else somewhere down the line.

Found a true "Gem" that really provided something crucial to your understanding/resolution to a problem on these bikes?

Not so easy to do considering all the thousands of posts/threads that repeatedly deal with the same problem and/or fail to actually report what resolved the issue.

When I find these "diamonds" amongst the coal I do this:

In theory it's s'posed to make these threads rise to the top of the list instead of fading away into oblivion. Unfortunately, when one uses the furr'em search engine the results don't show the rating or allow one to sort the threads according to the ratings.

Oh, I also make a note of the members that do provide these "Gems". IMO, one of the most productive uses of this forum is to single out these members and read EVERYTHING they've ever posted.

I found that they continue to provide great insights in just about every thread they reply to.

That's a good system that I totally ignored in the past. I will start to rate the threads that are usefull.

you reckon that's a typo? I thought Rickrod had invented a new word, a combination of education and etiquette, meaning to politely learn something.

I got no problem with folks who post to an older thread. I believe it actualy saves a little on storage space by not starting a new thread.

Its the 20 year old (yes I know, exageration) polls that someone votes on, but does not comment to that give me a little heartburn. It brings it to the top of the list, looks like there is a new post, open it, and newest post was years ago, its just that someone added their vote.

First, we appreciate that you are looking at old threads and not starting a "Which oil is best?" thread everytime you do an oil change.

The guys above did a good job of outlining what is generally accepted. If you have a breakthrough insight, feel free to add to an old thread. If an old thread raises a question that you need an answer to but does not give the answer, feel free to resurrect it. The worst that can happen is that some of the grouchier members will give you grief, and how many days do you get without getting a little grief?

I'm a "usable information" junkie when it comes to my special. No pride/ego to stop me from aksing the awkward questions either.
