  • Oh, Michigan...

I recently accepted a (hopefully) great corporate job, and will be relocating to Michigan. Sadly, I know nothing about the state, so I was wondering if a few of you locals might be able to give me some tips or pointers on the great state. I will be working from a home office, so location is not terribly important. However, I do have to travel a fair bit and would like to remain somewhat central (Lansing-ish area) Beyond that, I have no clue about what there is to do, the climate, the cost of living, etc. Thanks in advance!

How far will you need to travel, in state, out of state, the entire state? Grand Rapids is a decent place. The west coast on lake Michigan is a great place during the warmer months.

Since you coming from Bozeman, well, the concept of an real spring thaw will not be to terrible for you to adjust to.

Well, at least you'll be that much closer to the Lost Rally. Well, across the lake, and XS East. The temps are a bit cooler I believe because of the lakes.

Sorry you had to leave the Big Sky Country.

Michigan is a great state to live in!! Surrounded by the Great Lakes, with a beautiful peninsula of nothing but woods, lol. If you will be working in Lansing, you are about an hour to hour and a half drive from anything important. Personally, I think Lansing has become a ghetto despite Michigan State in East Lansing. I grew up in Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield (Oakland County) and will eventually live back down there when I have the means to do so. It really depends on your preferences. If you are a city-boy, there are some really nice suburban cities all over Michigan. If you are a country boy and love your space, Michigan is still very much a rural state as well. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

          Good news!

Greg, fortunately I wasn't forced out of Montana. This is a definite career move up-- with the stipulation that I have to move. It's a full corporate gig, so it's pretty comprehensive. So at least they much...gonna miss MT though!

As I said earlier, I'm glad I don't have to live in any particular place. I'm actually looking more between lansing and Grand Rapids, since I really want to be rural. We'll see if it pans out.

Thanks for the tips fellas! My snowblower is moving with me...

Wow, okay. Anything on the west coast is all rural. Wyoming out that way is nice. Grand Ledge near Lansing is a nice little town. Nice rural areas all around Lansing like Everett, etc. Michigan is one of those states you really have to travel to appreciate. I know a lot of people that have lived in the slums of Flint and Detroit their whole lives and never left, and complain about what a crappy state Michigan is. I'm like, if you go ten miles outside of this city, your opinion would change!!!

                  Hey there Ford,

I don't know anything about Michigan, but you mentioned a home office type job. I'm thinking that you'll be communicating via the internet. I know around here in SE Va where there's a ~6 city metroplex, that just a few miles out into the country and you can't get hi speed internet.... no cable, no dsl, about the only option is Satellite!

Now I know there's some new technology with 4G phones and such, but again, you'll need a cell tower nearby, again possibly a dead zone way out in the country!? Just some thoughts regarding your location vs. functionality!?

I'll be visiting Chicago the first week of November for a medical conference, think I'll need a coat??

MY cell is supposed to get 4G, best I ever see is 2G. That is traveling all around Ky, Oh, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, WV. And yes, there are PLENTY of dead spots more depending on the carrier you use.

As for Chicago, umm...depends. coming form the Virginia area, YES!! Now Nanuk the eskimo might still find it a warm environment. I was there last week, only a long sleeve shirt with me. Not fun walking around. They say it is called the Windy City due to all the politicians hot air, but do not kid yourself, the wind off that lake cuts through most clothes right now!

*sighs* Well, better just sign up at a race track for some track days to get the speed out of my system, then!

Garrett: You can come up anytime, brother--but I'll meet you outside, lol! It'd be cool to meet up some time, though!

My work will be a lot of traveling the state, as well as computer based work--hopefully a good mix of both.

Starting realty work this week, thanks all for the valuable input!
