Boy am I glad I opened this thread!
Beer is my true love (don't tell my wife, she already knows). I had my first sip of Corona when I was nine and my mom left the room so I swapped her Corona with my apple juice and downed a quarter of it. She wasn't happy.
I love all beer, except IPA because it kills my insides and gives men boobs.
Chimay blue label is excellent as is anything by Unibroue. Unibroue also makes the Trader Joe's seasonal ales every winter.
My true loves are the Stouts and Porters, anything too dark to see through.
For truly excellent inexpensive beer, try Baltika. They are a Russian brewery that numbers their beers. No. 4 and No. 9 are great and when on sale this stuff is CHEAP. Great beer doesn't have to be expensive.
One of the pleasures of living where I do is breweries, breweries, breweries. Hale's cream ale is great. Elysian Dragon'stooth. Elliot Bay Brewing anything, particularly the No Doubt Stout. Of course Pyramid and Red Hook have great beers of all kinds.
Oregon, oh how I love that state. Rogue (Dead Guy, a red ale), Deschutes (Twilight, Mirror Pond, Black Butte Porter).
I have had Arrogant Bastard and Double Bastard but it's just too hoppy for me.
Steelhead, originally from California, makes simply THE BEST barleywine in the world. Over 10% alchy and smooth from the draw to the way down.
I've had so much beer I can't even think of a teenth of them.1990 Ninja ZX-10. It's the Silver Surfer. HI-YA!!
2006 Yamaha XT-225. Yep, I take it on the interstate. It's Blue Butt.
1982 Toyota 4x4. 22R Cammed, 38/38, 2" pipe, 20R head with OS valves, performance grind and other fun stuff. It's Blue RASPberry.
1969 Ford F-250 Camper Special resto project. 390 RV cam, Demon carb, Sanderson headers, 2 and a quarter pipes with Magnaflow mufflers. It's Blue Jay.

Ever try mead?
Sky River is good if you like the more modern, dessert-wine style of mead. Which I do.
Then there's the crazy stuff, like Viking Blod:

Warning, it may make you hallucinate, like Jagermeister.
Ciders are great too. Wyder's Raspberry. Alpenfire, particularly Pirate's Plank Bone Dry. Crispin is good.1990 Ninja ZX-10. It's the Silver Surfer. HI-YA!!

So, don't know when you served, but they were pretty frequent when I was in in the late 80's early 90's.
Marty.. looking around more, there does tend to be many more stories saying the opiate/ouzo mix is a myth. Still can't make me drink it though.. lol.Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

The Place To Go
Some of you have been, some of you don't have one nearby. The place to go for practically every beer that you have and have not heard of is TACO MAC. They have more taps than you can count on the wall, plus many more selections in the bottle. And there are bunches of places to sit at the bar. Alcohol content is as high as 11-12%. Maybe higher. Whew!
Other than beer, they are famous for their chicken wings.
If you have not tried TACO MAC, I recommend it. Not sure of all of the states they are in. Just have to hunt.

St Bernardus Abt12 is my favorite whether first or 30th.
See there! We have a 2nd... so something I'll have to give a try. Not a perfect formula though, as someone seconded the ouzo and Jager.. lol.Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

As my father used to tell me about all the vegetables, puff balls, and critters he used to eat "You just don't know what your missing!"
Now do not get fooled into thinking I have not enjoyed and partaken of my good friend Jack in quantity on occasions. Jose and I are brothers from another mother, however we sometimes disagree on how much of each other is a good thing.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Breckenridge Small Batch 471 Double IPA
I used to only be a stout man, but worked my way on to hops, and now that's my preferred flavor. I found this one by accident, but as soon as I tried it, I went back for more.
Here's my pseudo-beer nerd attempt at describing it...
It's hoppy; I mean, heck, it's a double IPA. But it has a malty character that finishes with almost a hint of sweet, but is still clean and crisp at the end. It has some body without being heavy.
I don't know if you'll still be able to find this, but it's no longer in any of the places I go in MI, so if you see it, give it a try.-Do what makes you happy.
