  • Tired of stickies

Is anyone else thinking we should have a sticky for stickies. One sticky on the top of each page to direct users to the sticky section. Another site I visit uses this method and it seems very effective. I think maybe we could move all the stickies except for one on the top of each page to it's own page. That way we do not have to scroll down past 6 stickies to get to what we want to see. Maybe it is just me, but that sorta sucks wind.
Maybe a Mod will do a poll and see what the members would prefer. As a member I read all the stickies and would rather only see the new posts to one. If non-members do not join in the fun then that is their problem.
On another note I would suggest that part of the registration process would require the signature to be filled out so that we all know what bike a person is working on. If one has many bikes then that could be an option as well.
Mostly just thinking out loud here but Damn I am getting tired of the "Please post your model and year" posts. The other thing is that if anyone is serious about enjoying this site they will happily fill out a request for year and model before joining.
Dunno why so many that would like help will not give info. Watch at your local NAPA for an hour and see how many guys come in and say I need a starter for a 350 Chev and then get pissy when the guy asks for year and model. They will say "Well it is a 350 Chevy" as if every 350 was the same.
Point is that if it was a matter of registration then no one would complain. Do not know if it is even possible but I personally would love to see it happen.

Wouldn't It Be Nice Thread (WIBN...)

    Rasputin,

would rather only see the new posts to one.
I've read all the stickies as well. I don't see them at the top of the page anymore because I click on the "New Posts" button on the blue toolbar. Of course I continue to see any new posts to the stickies when they are made. It's just a work-a-round I personally use....a LOT.

+1 on making a token attempt to get the make/model/year as part of the initial registration. (putting an "*" next to the empty data fields to show they are Required fields and redirecting the user back to the registration page if they aren't filled in...) For those of use who've already put our info somewhere else (signature???) then we won't have to do it all over again, right?

On the WIBN side of things, it would be to my liking if Topics that had been double, triple, quadruple, and "ad nauseum" posted (10-20 times???) were flagged as "BTDT" and new posts require Mod permission. (After the member had done a reasonable and concerted search to read every other thread dealing with that issue...)

And if there were one thing I would ask for it would be that in the Tech Discussion forum there would be some indicator for me to tell the difference between those threads that find/resolve the problem and those that just dead end without reporting what the fix/solution really was... Zombie Threads?

All good points that may help make the forum an easier site to access by all.
Anyone else have an other ideas that might help!

        Hey there Larry and Doug,

Thanks for volunteering, you are now honorary MODS!

Seriously, we only have a few, Steve(Retired)...and he's been rather busy with his personal life lately(Divorce), and has already done a TON of stuff for the site, ie. reviewing and refining the TIPS UNDER CONSTRUCTION section and creating many new tech tips from that, collating other tips together, etc.!

DiverRay, think he's been busy trying to stay employed in Cantifordia!

And then myself also with a full time job M-F 8-5.

Regrettably the registration process has been changed due to the chronic spammers problem, folks don't get to fill out a registration anymore! As per the ANNOUNCEMENT at the top of every subforum where posts/threads are read it invites newbies/non-members to click on it to learn the "new" registration process. I DO request that they provide both their desired USERNAME and temp Password along with the Year and Model/special/standard and to submit that info to the CONTACT US email address. THEN "I" have to actually create their accounts from their supplied info. IF they only say 80 XS11, I politely ask them use the VIN#/Ser# thread in the MISC forum and add that to their Profile and signature for easier future reference and state that Tech Info is year/model specific!

So...you see I DO try to get that when they register, but I don't want to hold up their registration just to get the year/model style if they don't provide that!

As to the Stickies, yes, I agree that there are too many of them. I'll be looking to condense/combine or remove the ones that are not really necessary anymore. However, as you have already read the stickies, you know that we also made a token attempt as asking folks to read thru the tech tips, and to SEARCH the forums for info prior to posting, but many of the folks in the X and Y generation are not used to or willing to WAIT....or possibly work for their info, they want it immediately, and so they fly right off and post a new help me with ### thread.

I'm averaging new member registrations at least 1 a day, sometimes more. That's 7 or more a week. Then to have the time to actually MODERATE them with their pending threads/posts! As I stated at the beginning, we really could use a few more MODS to assist in the ADMIN of the site, and would welcome and entertain a few applicants!!

                  TC,

Hmm...umm...OH! Right!!! If I'm understanding you correctly then the site could benefit from having one or more additional Mods to share the workload. I've never figured out just how one becomes a Mod in the first place.

Sorta like a catch 22 right now. I mean anyone who would start a thread titled:

" I wanna be a Moderator in this here forum" (IE: Nate's volunteering...) would be treated as if he's one or two friction plates short of a full set. Therefore they'd already be disqualified from serving the site as a moderator. (Oddly enough if that's truly the way things work then I would still be in favor of putting the "Moderation Tools menu." in Nate's hands.)

There is no "stickie: (So Sorry, Rasputin...) that details the Job description of a moderator. No way for the "applicant" to know beforehand what qualifications are necessary, how much time per day/week is expected to be volunteered, nor what the duties/responsibilities are. On some VBulletin forums there's a place where one can even fill out an application to become a moderator. So far I haven't found out where that is here on XS11.com.

I think that the process of becoming/hiring(???) a moderator is something worth considering and discussing. Especially if the discussion is intended to define or create a process where members can "know-before-you-go" and the road/path to becoming a moderator is open to all. As I see it, that might not only provide some immediate relief to the current Mods, but provide a means for those to wish to serve the XS site/community as a Mod to do so. I put forth that the true problem isn't that there aren't enough moderators. It's that the process to openly recruit moderators from the general members isn't. It just isn't there for members to find/use.

For me personally, at the moment I'm not ready to be a moderator due to ongoing projects that require most of my attention. However, I would be willing to serve on some informal "committee" tasked with writing the job description, the moderator application form, and outlining/defining the "How to Become a Moderator on XS11.com" process.

So now do Rasputin and I do this in the open "Furrem" here or should we start a "pre-discussion" using PM's?

(You were heard, TC. I dearly appreciate your years of volunteerism. Now let's see if there's a way to help Atlas shoulder the weight of the XS world...)

As the 'new guy' mod, I can tell you that the 'duties' usually aren't that hard. TC asked me to be one because he saw that I was on-site very regularly (easy for me being retired) and seemed to be helpful (which I try to be). Basic duties are mostly just housekeeping; occasionally moving a thread posted to the wrong forum, helping somebody with a post (fixing pic links mostly), or pointing somebody in the right direction. The toughest part of mod duty is keeping a eye out for off-subject posts, particularly any HBTs (like politics, guns, and religion to name a few) that can rile people up to no good effect (yeah, the older members will remember the HBT forum! ). The vast majority of members know and follow the posting rules, but sometimes people forget... This will be the hard part when it happens, as IMHO you need to suppress your own opinion and be even-handed, not heavy-handed if possible. I haven't banned anybody, and only one guy got close... This is a 'family' site (OK, maybe more PG rated , but that's where a mods' good judgement comes in ) and dedicated primarily to the XS motorcycle, so a mod is supposed to help keep it on point. I also think a mod should do their very best to make sure they give accurate info, but we're all human....

As TC said, there's only the three of us that are regularly active and two have full-time jobs. I've been shouldering most of it (and I'm not complaining, I volunteered when asked!) but my recent 'personal issues' have cut into my time rather deeply. Keep in mind that a mod isn't the same as Admin like TC; he's got more duties/responsibilities, leaving him less time for 'plain' mod stuff...

If anybody has any questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them in a PM, or at least give my view.

I currently serve as the shop steward in our local. It is a thankless (and unpaid) job and is far more demanding than some may think. I would assume that moderators are much the same so "Points" for anyone who is willing to do so. Even though I have sometimes been hard on our mods I do appreciate what they do.
During the building season around here I leave at 5am and usually do not get home before 8PM. That kind of makes things tough to be able to keep score on the forum. The winter months, I have way, way more time, but then posts are down in numbers and extra mods are not required.
In all honesty I am far to cranky, miserable, opinionated, hard headed and have a low tolerance for those who disagree with me to serve as a mod. I would be more than happy to help out when and if I can but am seriously not the right guy for the job.
Kudo's to Nate for volunteering. I must also say that everyone who has served as a moderator over the years on this forum is appreciated as they made this site what it is today.
