I see I'm not the only one still awake, hopefully I'm not the only one drunk tonight too.

I have used oven cleaner with success also. Works even better, quicker, if pipes are warm. Do not get it on aluminum. Big spots quick...
Blue Job, an expensive chrome cleaner available at many MC shops, cleans even discolored pipes.
Abrasive pads or metal polish cleaners will scratch & dull the chrome, Blue Majic is about the least abraisive metal polish (even polishes plexiglass).
That would be Blu-Away Brent............very small amount and keep rubbing it'll sure remove the bluing even it it's almost black up near head. Good quality chrome helps, so don't know how that would work on Macs, etc. Know I couldn't get results on my bro-inlaws rear head pipe on his Suzy Intruder.

The most recent rehabilitation job on an XS involved a left side pipe that had what must have been plastic shoe heel melted onto the muffler, where you put your heel to catch the side stand knob.
Chrome turns gold at more than 1100 deg, and I don't know of any plastics that remain "plastic" at those temperatures, but rather, they will turn into char.
So I took a propane torch, and a wood paint stick, and played the flame over the plastic till it got soft, and scraped the plastic off. If you watch the chrome, you can see if it starts to discolor, and back off with the flame.
Heat the plastic hot enough to turn it to carbon, and then any of the common chrome polish's will take the char off.
A burlap bag soaked in oil might also be used to wipe off the heated plastic. Oil vaporizes around 450 deg, so if the oil smoked, that would tell you what temperature you were heating the metal to. The oil might actually dilute the plastic and make it come off easier. I didn't try that, since the stick got enough off that chrome polish took care of what was left.
If you have any success, let is know, for future reference. CZ
I got the better part of it off just scraping with a razor blade. I think the more it chars the easier it will come off.
I'll see how it is after this next trip. Thanks CZ.

The best product that is cheap and easily available is Wiemans Glass cook-top cleaner sold at many grocery stores, Walmart, or other household good stores. It is designed to take caked on food off of those new modern glass cook tops. I have removed several melted shoe soles from my exhaust pipes among other things. Just grab and old sock saturated with Wiemans and in about 5 min of rubbing, it comes right off. Stay away from steel wool or other abrasives obviously.
