Don't wetsand with anything higher than 320 before the clear. The clear won't stick well if you go any higher. Since you are using rattle can it needs to dry before you do the sanding so each coat need to mechanically bond to the previous layer and that means rougher is better.

In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.
I understand what you are saying Nate, but I did Great Ranger's color coat with 1000 then clear. Then 2000 on the clear, though anything over 1500 is pretty smooth.

Better safe than sorry. I have had clear coat chip off in the past from not bonding well to the undercoat cause it was too smooth.

The sidecovers look good so far. I havent sanded at all yet (during painting) and have not put on the clear yet just the paint. I have to definatley sand though to get those little specs out. I want to get that really good clear that resists gas.

i've painted several of my restored bikes with rattle cans with great results.
i used dupli color brand primer, paint, and clear coat. i let it dry overnight between coats and wet sanded before and after each of the 3 final clearcoats. then let it dry for about 4-5 days. final step was to put on 3 coats of a polish called liquid glass for cars. let it bake in the sun for half a day between each coat and the paint will easily stand up to spilled gas. btdt.
it's great stuff for old and new paint.
That looks great shack. Mine will be orange and black. Here are the side covers after the first coat, no wetsanding yet.
That color doesnt really look the same in the pic. I probably put 7 really light coats on so I wouldnt get a run or "thick" spot. It took 4 coats just to cover the primer good. I am also using duplicolor. I thought the tank was pretty good, had a few dings bondo'd, then when i primered it, i found more spots for bondo, just little dings. I want it done right though. At least as right as rattlecanning can be. Thanks guys.
