Yay! Got a title for Enterprise...

So I had traded our XS400 for an 81 SH that had made the rounds...you know, last registered owner sells it to someone who rides it till tags expire but never transfers it, then sells it to another who messes it up and now its not running but just needs carbs done and good as new to another kid who doesn't know what he's doing and cannot figure it out so trades it for a smaller, running bike with current tags.

So State of Texas says I need signature of last registered owner so I send letter with application, story, and $40 check with self addressed envelope via Certified Mail. If returned undeliverable I am OK State accepts I tried and nobody cashes check. If they sign I am good with paying $40 for a title, only bad scenario is they cash check and trash application

The lady writes me a nice letter - now living in Idaho, the Certified Letter was forwarded - and signs my application and tells me a little about the bike in the letter. She sent her phone and email as I promised a pic when build was done.

So now I can really begin as I didn't want to invest too much without a good title.

I wish it was that simple in NY... how did you track down the last registered owner? The DMV here will not disclose that info anymore due to privacy laws... Plus they purge their files every so often which makes it almost impossible!

My bike came from Minnesota and I'm still waiting for the title, The guy I got it from sent it in and traded it to me before he had it, started out a 4 to 6 week,then 6 to 8 week and now a 2 to 4 month waiting period. I checked with the MN DMV and its being processed but can't believe how long it takes.
The positive part is he paid for insurance for the year.

I had the same thing with mine. He registered it about a month before I bought it. Took another two months before he received the title. Minnesota is 3-4 months back logged on titles after the gvmt. shutdown last fall.

Have done 4 here as well. Only had one I had to get a bonded title for(the XS650).

WMarshy, Texas DMV will disclose the last registered owner for $2.00

My bike had a title, so paid for the transfer almost two months ago now and still have not recieved the new one in my name. Minnesota DMV is sloooowwww.

Good to know the guy was telling me the truth, I still know he wasn't completely up front but I still feel it was a good deal. Hard to believe any dept. can so sooooooo slooowwww. I just walked in the DMV in Rice Lake Wisc. last time and walked out with the title and plates. Oh well.

Chatting with a friend of mine on Facebook today, who lives in Idaho now... LOL

Small world, he brought that bike up to Katy a few years ago and I got it running for him.

I got the trunk off of it still.

Richard, you mean MY bike was in Katy? The gal I contacted said she bought it from a mechanic in Magnolia and lived in Sheridan. So could be...she said it ran good when she had it, but had wrong TCI on it when I got it.

BTW Wade, in TX the owners name and address are on the Title (which makes it easy) and the Name Only of the previous registered owner is as well.

I only needed the signature of the woman whose name it was registered to in order to complete the deal. I applied for "Title Only" and surrendered the old plates since I didnt want to pay registration and insurance on a nonrunning bike. When its complete I will apply for Antique Motorcycle Plates since its over 30 years old. Cheaper and no annual inspection required.

He trailered it to Katy from Sheridan. I went by to see him just before he moved to Idaho. He ended up calling me while we were chatting. He asked if I knew John W. Hughes, to which I said yes. He said you sent some pics of your bikes to him, along with this one, beat up seat and all. Small world for sure.

@Greg - yes two projects, but this one is closer to running so I started on this one, but might take forks from Traveler since they are in better shape.
