For the most part you try to keep them calm - jumping out of a flying aircraft usually takes care of the scaring part. The plane ride up is usually the worst part for students, and that's when they really start to get scared. So we'd do a lot of joking around and stuff to get their minds off the approaching moment. But sometimes you'd get these students that were half nuts, and they're the same kind of students that don't listen to commands. Which is the same kind of student that will get you killed. With those types I always made it a point to show them the hook knife that was attached to the back of every student harness. It's there in case you get a line-over and need to cut a line, but that's not what I told them.

I'd pull the hook knife out and show it to them and say, "Do you know what this is?"

    And they'd say "No."

And I'd say, "It's a hook knife. Do you know what it's there for?"

    And they'd say "No."

And I'd say, "It's there in case I have to cut you away."

And their eyes would get REAL big. And then I'd say "Hey! There's no reason we both have to die!"

That usually kept 'em pretty well behaved.

I've been out of it for quite a spell, and I wouldn't trust myself at altitude anymore. Forty years of smoking and the thin air at altitude don't go well together. But if you want to, I can sure point you in the right direction. Tandem masters don't come any better than Gary Arnold at Skydive Greene County. That's all he does. He does tandems at Greene County until the weather gets cold, and then he goes to Thailand and does 'em there until it warms back up. He's probably got ten thousand or more tandems. Definitely the guy you want to be strapped to.

          • Lunken's cool. I used to like to go up to Alt Park and watch the planes take off and land when I lived down that way.

              • Did take my neighbor to Ault and Alms Park today,he had never been to either.
If you haven't been to either parks in years, they are really beautiful right now and as close as you live..well worth it.

Just goes to show ya you do not mess a landscapers tools and expect to get away.Had a blower stolen last year, not cheap,4 stroke two cycle Stihl.

So far as Lunken goes, used to fly out of there around the city on those cheap tours,We went to Kelly's Island one time in a Cessna and had lunch there and sneaked into Canada a bit.

                          • Staying at home not riding your bike is like not riding the wife so the next owner will have a nice ride.

                                Thanks Bill,
Looks like you are doing exactly what you described in your earlier thread about buying an RV.
Nice pictures. Interesting stone work on the bridge. Double stacked containers makes for a heavy load. In the last one did you go for a ferry ride ?
