I'd love to get 'antique' plates for mine, but then I can't use them for daily drivers.

I was hoping to do that myself, then added up my regular mileage. I can't get more than 1000 miles/year for personal use, so I'd be done riding by about the end of March... The nice part about those plates here is that they exempt you from all inspections - emissions AND safety. Though that's a little frightening knowing that really old vehicles can be driving around, just about ready to fall apart because they never get inspected.

This thread did inspire me though - I just reserved my MO plate as "XS11". Not sure how long it takes to be approved and sent though. Plus it adds $15/yr to my registration costs.

not in Saskatchewan, bike plates here can only have 5 or less letters/numbers.
And the Prestige Plate Police have a vigorous vetting policy.
SEXY for instance, is forbidden. Guy I know wasn't allowed his Harley's multi-letter designation code because it ended in XY.
He had to visit the PPP in person and show his paperwork to get that plate approved.
My XS plate was to be XS650 because that's what I was riding back then but I
couldn't have it because "in the future we may need to issue an XS plate series"
So I settled for XS. Worked out well in the end, 5 separate Yamaha models I can hang it on.

You guys make me feel SO much better about my level of anal retentiveness, I practically feel like a free spirit some days.

You KNOW we do this crap on purpose right? We stir vigorously every once in a while to keep things from settling down too much . Keeps things fun, and takes the mind off the fact that your getting older and that doing some things on the bike are harder to do than they used to do.

BTW, if you put TC's SOFA on your bike, when it says to make sure the thing is really good and tight, make sure it IS. I had to remove mine today because it wasn't tight enough and when I change my oil and filter is shifted and started leaking, but was still tight enough I couldn't get it off, had to almost destroy the threaded hollow bolt to get it off, gotta find out what TC is going to charge me for a replacement bolt so I can put it back on, in the meantime I'm back to the OEM filter until then, which rather sucks.

Be way cheaper to get a 'vintage' plate.... You only buy those once; the vanity plates you have to renew every year and pay a premium...

I've owned a couple vanity plates....
You pay an extra $32 a year ontop of your regular fee. So ya you better be sold on having one. Cuz if you don't renew it you loose it. I've actually got a plate name picked out to honor my dad... When i get it I'll post it up on a thread. Just wanted to see if xs was available and was surprised it was.

Fred, us people here in good ole' alberta can get 7 letters/numbers on our plates here and if you order a vanity plate here you even get 2 of them and you pay a premium to get them here but registration is the same as everybody else no extra cost.

Maybe Fred you might just have to move out of the bush!!!

the cost of a vanity plate depends on where you are.
In Saskatchewan it costs ~$82 but it's a one time fee. Then the plate is yours forever. But you can't sell it. You can't even give it away. The only option is to hand it back in and they will decide who gets it next.
That's why a friend still has a GUZZI plate displayed in his garage a decade after he sold the Guzzi.

7 letters is good but you guys got plates the size of bedsheets to put them on.
Although 7 letters would make a VINCENT plate possible. Betcha somebody must have already gotten it.

That is interesting with the new plates every 7 years. Brutus still has the plates that he got when he was new (was sold new in Ca) which are the same type of plate that I would get if I applied for year of manufacture plates, which would be a waste of money for me since I already have those. Now if someone STOLE my plates I would likely spring for them, but as long as I still have the originals, i'll stick with them, and it's one reason for NOT getting vanity plates, since they would NOT be the proper color for the year of the bike. In Ca the vanity plates go with the person not the vehicle, so if I had them, on sale I would remove the plates and keep them and could if I wished put them on another vehicle of mine as long as I continued to pay for them. Just to be clear, I do have to register with DMV what the vehicle is that they are on, but they do not stay with the vehicle on sale as the plates are mine not the vehicles like normal plates.
