Hello all, thanks for allowing me to become a member! Awesome info on this site, from cleaners to fuse box replacement. I have been reading this site while trying to restore 79F. Seems like a great, supportive group.

Greetings from an unusually warm MI.

              Photo's

Here we go. This in my79. My father purchased it new in March of 1979 and rode it until 84. He gave it to me, I rode it up until 88. At that time I got married, bought a house and we had children. The bike sat for almost 10 years. I pulled it out of the shed to start the process of cleaning carbs, brakes etc. I rode for a couple of years, and then found myself working and involved in the kids school and sports. So, the bike sat again until this fall. My son and I torn it down and started the process, all over again. I have been using as many factory parts as I can find, trying to keep this as original as possible. This is a pic before we started cleaning and rebuilding. We are at a standstill until the weather warms back up, not much to do outside of polishing and cleaning. I will work on the others later..

On a new thought. You should consider preserving and storing that bike, get another that "average" people can get and enjoy. That bike will be worth a fortune someday. Envy.

Thanks! The plan is to put enough miles on it to keep everything working, but not too many. It currently has 18,000.

I just picked up this 80. Right away, I noticed the seat was off a 78 or 79. It needs a ton of work, brakes, carbs, fuse box, etc. Not real crazy about the color, I am thinking of the OE grey for that year. This will give me something to work on in the summer. This one has an oil cooler, does anyone know if that was standard equipment for a bike with a fairing, or did the PO add this on?

That tank looks a little big to be just an 80G, it could be an 81H. The 81 has a little bigger tank.
The VIN will be the way to go to ID it.
If it's an 81 that means it a venture and came factory with the fairing and I do beileve the cooler too.
I ended up putting an 81 cooler on my 80. Bolts up real nice under the fairing.
Yeah that seat is off an earlier standard. The dead give away for me was the 'extra' gap between the seat and the side cover. The 80G seat has a slight dip in it to close up that gap around the sidecover.

I've also got the wrong seat on mine too.

The rotors and engine side covers aren't 81, they are 80. The 81 has slotted rotors, the 80G doesn't (SG does however) and the tank knee indents look curved like the 80 ones rather than the more straight ones of the 81 so the seat may just be making it look oversize, the 81 tank color would be blue IIRC as well, but the 80 came in red as one of the OE colors.

Oil cooler would be an add-on as that's an 80G although someone put the 81 Venturer fairing on it.
