Hope you feel better Cy, it sucks when a brother goes down.

While it does hurt when a brother goes down, it hurts even worse when that brother is you . It hurts to cough, or to laugh, or to try and get out of my chair to use the facilities, and getting off the toilet is a chore. I know in the scheme of things I came out pretty well, but it still doesn't feel like it . I went out a looked at the bike a bit today, and it's clear where the impact was, as there is a mark on the left bag right below the top front, and another mark on the left front of the trunk, with a nick there, which can't have come from anything but the truck that hit me.
So far it looks like I'm going to need the engine timing cover, an 81 would be nice to match the alternator cover and engine, the left mirror (standard mirror) and I've got to decide what to do about the highway pegs, because the left one snapped right off, and the post of it's damaged so I'm not sure I could put it back on even if I can get the broken off bolt out of it. Maybe it's time to hunt up a pair of engine guards to replace the highway pegs with, maybe I wouldn't be looking for the engine timing cover if I had engine guards on there. The edge stripping is scraped up on the fairing too, and the door on the right saddlebag was ripped off, so I've got to figure out if the door can be replaced or if the saddlebag needs to be replaced. There is an impact mark on the saddlebag, but I think it will buff out (no, really), but I've got to look closer at the trunk, cause I think the nick where it got hit created a hole in it. I haven't checked the mounting points of the bags and trunk yet for damage, but given that the impact threw the bike over on it's left side which threw me off the bike, almost on my head, I think they may have come through fine.
Other than that the fairing appears fine, as do the mounting points that I've checked. My right arm and right pinky finger are rather sore.Cy

OH Yes, I remember it well!! (or so the song goes ) Heck if you can roll on one side at night and not scream your doing ok!! I do recall when I finally could use a real bathroom fixture and not the free standing "chair", that the seat is rather low by comparison. It is amazing how much harder it is to stand up from six inches lower.
In a couple weeks from the sound of things you should be good as, well, good as old And the bike came through in pretty good condition with limited damage from the sound of it as well.
As to those "engine guards", well, the stock two monting point guards are a misnomer in my opinion. From expereince I can tell you they bend easily and when they do bend, they tend to crush the engine cover. And in my case, that led to busting the bolt holes out in several places on both upper and lower engine cases. So while thye make a great place to hang highway pegs, they offer little real protection.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Holy smoke! I'm glad you're alright, Cy, I was fooling with that stupid gas tank and not paying attention to the list!
I have some spare parts that'll work if you need 'em but nothing from an '81.-- Scott

The 79 has the loop type kinda like you see on Harleys. They seem like they would offer more protection without being part of the destruction.
You can kinda see them in this pic.

I blame Cy!
I almost went to the hospital this afternoon. TWICE!
One of the computer fans has been howlin' and growlin' for the last few days and this afternoon it gave up the ghost. "No problem," I said to myself, "I'll just finish blocking and sanding the tank and then ride down to the store to get another fan." So I snap-rolled Columbo out of the garage, locked the center stand in the attack position, set all enricheners on double front, hit the ignition and gave the engine a solid kick to start the run to the Target shopping center.
There was a loud, "CRACK!" and the kicker seemed to keep going down while the bike and I rolled over on the right side with the footrest pinning my leg and knee against the ground as my knee slowly bent further backward and sideways, sort of. "Ouch!" I tried to whisper, "What happened?"
I managed to stop the bike from rolling back any farther and lift it enough to get my leg out, then turned around, grabbed the handlebars and the seat and slowly back-walked the bike upright; at which point it tried to keep going up and over to the other side. Yes, the center stand had broken off the frame and folded forward.
Shucks....
I had to lay the bike back on its side to pull the center stand off and lever out the side stand. My knee made funky pop squishy-clicky noises but it wasn't actually, you know, like, uh, broken or anything so it was time to get the ride done before things got worse. The frame looked okay except for the hole where the center stand used to be so I wimped out and hit the Start button for the ride down to the mall.
The first couple of stores were out of 120mm fans (I know, weird, huh? On a Thursday?) so I took a ride to the the Best Buy at the other end of town. I stopped at the stop sign and started to make the left turn into the parking lot when an elderly lady coming toward me at a a high rate of speed suddenly switched lanes to dodge the car in front of her that had stopped at the pesky stop sign for the intersection, then blew around her at ~50 MPH. She almost got me, gave me a sheepish look and blasted off on her merry way.
If it were not for my usual highly dull sense of my surroundings at all times and my finely honed sloth-like reflexes along with my obsessive mechanical obsession with brakes and tires Columbo and I would have become one with the grill of the SUV and the pavement.
Okay, who here already knew that an XS1100G bagger with SS brake lines would do a mini stoppie and that you can kick-swing the back end around almost 90 degrees while its in the air and come to an immediate stop just like a dirt bike or a stingray? Well, [B[I[/B] sure didn't, until I did!
I have a new fan in the computer now, the gas tank project is on hold for the night and my knee is not in much better shape than Columbo's frame and center stand. I need to go find an Ace bandage and a couple of aspirin.Last edited by 3Phase; 01-12-2012, 11:12 PM.-- Scott

Well Scott, you need to tune up your preminition senses, that broken centerstand was surely a signal you were not supposed to take Columbo out.
I for one had NO idea you could do that stoppie thing you described, and I am certain your expression and thoughts were similar to mine when I discovered that an XS11 can be used to perform jumps of oh say ten feet long and maybe six feet high, and land pretty well at that, much better than I recall an XS750 landing after hopping up a street curb onto a sidewalk. I imagine when you got to where you were going your first stop was the restroom to shake out your trouser leg, and crow bar the seat out of your rectum. The stoppie scared me almost as much as the SUV but it was done and over with before I thought about what to do. As I rested my forehead on the tank and tried really hard not to weep openly or drop my bike in public, everyone else at the intersection gave a huge sigh of relief for me.
The new computer fan works and it's very quiet but it doesn't move enough air so I'll have to take it back to the store. After yesterday's hare-razing riding (Kill the wabbit! Kill the w-a-a-a-bbit!) I decided that I'd just wait a while and try to return the fan on a day that is not Friday the 13th.
Oh, yeah, I have had my XS11 airborn for several yards/meters/microfurlongs. What at first appeared to be a signed freeway exit actually turned out to be the pre-exit bypass for a weigh station and I hit the giant speed bump on the scale at about 60. It was a straight, comfortable, flight and the landing was actually pretty smooth but the pilot was a moron and there was no meal or movie. The wide-eyed CHP that was parked behind the building watched the whole thing but he just gave me an odd look after I landed. He was obviously too busy laughing to chase me as I sheepishly skulked out of the weigh station and slunk the rest of the way off of the freeway.-- Scott
