  • I HATE parking lots!

I'm sitting here on the computer in a lot of pain. At lunch time today, on my way out of the parking lot, some idiot in a lifted pickup truck backed into me in the parking lot of the McDonalds down the street from my work, knocking my off the bike and onto the ground about 7 feet from the bike. The good news is the tipover switch worked , the bad news is that the bike was on the ground and I lost a couple of minutes at least. I ended up at the emergency room with my shirt cut off and naked under a sheet while they took x-rays followed by a ct-scan. My whole body hurts now, my back is in spasm and I can barely walk, but the good news that nothing is broken, at least not on me. I've got bruises on my right hand and shoulder, on my left side and I don't know about my knees and legs yet (I can't bend over enough to look at them).

I don't know about the condition of the bike yet, other than I know that the left saddlebag at a minimum had the lid ripped off, the right saddlebag appears to have it's lid damaged and the trunk has at LEAST one broken isolation mount.

The left highway peg is broken off, and I'm told that the engine timing doesn't look too good either. As soon as I can move around a little better, I'll be making a parts list, after the insurance adjuster comes out. I gonna fight to make sure they don't total it. If nothing else, I'll find the parts and have them pay me a minimal amount for my labor and pay for the parts. Of course right now I've gotta find a GOOD attorney, I'm not going through this again without good legal representation.

Thanks. One thing I've learned, as you get older, it takes longer to get over stuff like this. I remembered my left mirror broke too. I won't be doing anything but cataloging the parts needed till it's been looked at by the insurance co, but I want to have an idea of what I'm looking at parts wise before I get ready to get started on it.

Jeez, I'm glad it wasn't any worse; at least he didn't go over you... The bike can be fixed or replaced, it's healing those 'older' bones that can be real drag.

Mechanically I think most of the bike is fine, but there does appear to be significant cosmetic damage. I've got heat on one part of my back and ice on the other part. In a while I switch the two, that and some good pain meds seem to be helping.

Hate to hear stuff liek that Cy, very sorry for your pain and anguish. I learned that broken bones are the easiest things to heal, its the pulled and torn mucles, ligaments, and tendons that take forever. So take it easy and let them heal.

As to the bike, I have a couple boxes-o-parts laying around here, so when you get your list together post it and I am sure we can help you come up with some if not most of what you need.

Glad your well enough to get on here and bitch about it. Pretty much the same thing happened to me last year just before Banned Camp. Luckily the only thing damaged was my exhaust though.

A woman backed right out into me as I was going through a shopping center parking lot. The bike glanced off the right rear corner but I slammed into the quarter panel. People just don't look when backing out of parking spaces. You gotta watch 'em.

Good luck with the insurance. It should cover your medical but a 30 year old bike ain't worth much in thier eyes.

                      Glad your OK

From personal experience I've come to the conclusion that parking lots are probably the most dangerous place for us, followed closely by intersections. I got run over and dragged by a five ton truck in a parking lot, and I was just sitting on my bike, it wasn't even running. Spent 30 days in ICU and six months in a cast. Completely killed the bike ( my first brand new 4 day old XS SF) but it saved my life. It got hung up under the truck and as he pushed/dragged me, the bike acted like a plow and kept me just ahead of the wheels and held the truck up off me. The two bottom cylinders were ground right off the motor. That was the start of my back problems. Bikes can be rebuilt or replaced. You can't. Heal soon and we'll find the parts you need.

They aren't making too many replacement parts for '57 models right now. I hope you heal fast and completely.

I was driving an old car several years ago when someone violated my right of way. When the adjuster showed up, of coarse he said the car was totaled. I told him he was buying the parts and paying me $20 per hour for my labor. He didn't even argue. He called a salvage yard then and there to price the parts. Prices weren't unreasonable and he immediately agreed.

No injuries were involved in my case, so you're probably right to get a lawyer involved.
