We've got some long trips planned for this summer and I dont wanna encounter a leaned out cyl due to a split boot I didn't care for in the middle of the high dessert of central washington... that would suck! ////////////// I have regularly used the thick good quality vacuum caps from NAPA and have found they get hard and crack/break within 3,000mi. An aughful lot of heat is transferred from those brass nipples. The OEM caps and spring clamps ARE still available from your local dealer as an option. There HAS been a couple of instances of 'holed piston syndrome' due to a vacuum cap other than OEM failure. A carb boot failure while riding is highly unlikely and should of been addressed LONG before that would happen.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Motoman thanks for the heads up. I think George fix and a couple other internet companies carry the stock replacement ones too. I'd set fire to my local yamaha dealership before I'd step inside of it... But there a couple other ones across the bridge in Oregon I can try I guess.... The only vac caps I've ever seen hold up over the years are ones I've bought from truck stops. So maybe ill chase some factory yamaha replacements down. Better safe then sorry.Don

+1, and you can get the plastidip in a spray can and make them look and work like new for just a few $$$$

Well I got bored...
Pull the cover off the "Old man" and fired it up to check intake leaks. let it warm up and hit them with both seafoam and starting fluid. No change in idle. but if you push on #1 and #4 it feels like your finger could break thru @ any time. Lil brittle
Willing to bet they are the stock onesfrom 79... probably oughta just bite the bullet and buy new ones.Don

There are three layers in those intake boots. Inner rubber, brass sleeve with the mounting base, and the the outer rubber. The brass goes about 2/3 of the way to the carbs and then it is just rubber so that you have the flexibility to get the in.Nathan

The outside of those look better than the ones I have on my 80G (83K miles)
I'd agree with the others and say if they're okay on the inside and there's no change with the seafoam spray then you've got no leaks.
The PlastiDip might make them look a little better.
New ones look nice but being new, the rubber is tougher/tighter and it'll be a PIA to get the carbs on and off until they get 'broken' in a little.
But hey, for $65 you can't beat that kind of insurance.Hi, my name is George & I'm a twisty addict!

I have a set of these and have not had any problems with them, they appear to be of good quality.

I recently replaced mine. I bought them from Parts-N-More. My old ones looked very good. I couldn't see cracks. Just the same, there was evidence of leaking. You just never know.
A tip: I use vinyl/rubber dressing to lube the boots for carb installation. It works the charm. Armor All will do the same thing.Marty (in Mississippi)

Thats a good tip Marty!
I sprayed the crap out of my boots with seafoam, and then starting fluid and the idle never changed a beat. I think I'll keep these on there for another summer. I'll keep an eye on them and check them from time to time. the cracks seem to be more stress from holding the weight of the carbs all these years more than weather checkingDon
