In a recent thread (“Narrowly avoided tranny lock up,”) a brother inquired if I had a back-up cycle to ride until I rebuild the Scoot. Well, as a matter of fact, I had just bought the hard tail cruzer of my dreams, and here it is. Check it out!

Oh, so you were thinking MOTOR cycle.! Oh no, no, no! I'm not that well off. But I am fortunate to live right on a bicycle path that runs along the San Lorenzo River right through Santa Cruz which is a very bike friendly town. I have a 10 speed, semi-off road bike that is functional, but not nearly as comfortable as this fat tire cruzer with the wide bars.
Specs:
Horse power: unknown*
Transmission: Seven forward speeds, twistgrip changer on right handlebar.
Brakes: yes, front and rear.
Braking distance; Varies.*
Acceleration: 0 to 60 (feet) in 15 seconds.*
Top speed: 40 mph (measured going down hill with a tail wind.)*
*Depending on rider.

Actually I do have a “ding ding” bell. When I began riding a bike on the bike/ pedestrian paths around The Peoples Republik, I became amused by the number of bike riders who can afford $1,000 racing bikes, and another several hundred dollars worth of spandex, helmet, and special shoes, but can't afford a freaking $5 bell to let others know they are approaching from the rear.

Too many bikes are ridden on the sidewalk today and without any warning they run up behind people, then try to push past or ride right on through them.

What gets my goat is the gangs/packs/extremely large groups of aforementioned idiots on the souped up bicycles with more spandex than an 80's hair band, a helmet more streamlined and fancy than anything you'll see at Bonneville, and a smug sense of I have all this gear and a fancy bike; I'm the second manifestation of Jesus Christ. I own this road. You are lucky I allow you to be behind me while I take up the entire lane.

Well, I would love to jump on the band wagon bashing certain bicycle riders because some of that behavior certainly happens and it is bothersome. I would just like to review it in alt terms. It is not the mode of transport, the same people drive and walk like that too! There are jerk Motorcycle Riders, Cage Drivers, Bicycle Riders, and some Seriously Loopy Peds out there as well. All forms of transport I use on a regular basis. I think the common denominator is the "me first, rules don't apply to me" people who have somehow lost their basic survival instinct and expect every one else to cover for them when they put themselves squarely in front of moving objects. I suggest introducing duals to provide a corrective social force for this kind of behavior. or is it so many twits just make me want to smack them? but I repress it and follow the rules like probably the greater portion of good folks out there. Oops a rant!

hmmm, stability, dynamics. . . . I definitely wouldn't try taking the new bike up around 100 mph like I would the 1100. Probably not stable enough for that!

Yes! I frequently wish I could just smack some pimply faced wise ass, or rude clerk up against their head with a pair of gauntlets and challenge them to defend their honor. Such challenges usually were reconciled before the actual event, but such a challenged usually indicated that the plaintiff really meant business! What is today's equivalent? “You'll hear from my lawyer!”. Sorry, but it just doesn't carry the same weight as “I'm willing to die for” my position: (i.e., faith, Country, sense of honor, love of another, allegiance to a cause.)
But then, I am a Bantam Weight Senior, and perhaps it is just as well that we live in a more “civilized” time.
