Any automotive type will work, it's just a matter of whether it will give an accurate reading or if you will have to do math. Most of them you will have to do math with, and since points are LONG gone now, they are getting hard to find, mostly they only are good to check the idle speed, and there are other devices to do it with. One that I have on my wish list is one from Harbor Freight that you press against the rotating assy and tells you the RPM. They have another that you can just point it at it and get the same thing, I guess it's supposed to watch for something unique that it sees on the rotating assy to get the RPMs.

I found a tach that is used for rc airplanes/helicopters for $13 haven't got it yet still in transit. Put a price of tape across the timing plate and point it at it.

        Old Analog Meter?

        Ozz,

I own and use the tach/dwell meter near the end of this video:

You can see it's just an old analog meter. I got it at a garage sale for $5.00.
I use it for all my vehicles and not just for the bike.

Pardon my ignorance, But you can get the proper engine RPM by using a digital no contact laser photo tachometer by pointing it at the timing plate?

It is connected to the end of the crank shaft so that would give a perfect rpm.

                That makes perfect sense.

                Thanks!
