I thought John's sounded decent when he stopped by on the way back from the Colo rally. Not as good as my Jardines, but then IMHO few things do . I too like the sound of the Jardines, especially when really romping on it, it reminds me of the quote from lee (trainz) about the sound of the badger .

Spitfires never had Allisons, Those were Rolls Royce Merlins. P51s originally had Allisons, and were considered mediocre at best untill they were fitted with Merlins.

replica spitfires use the Allison engines

to keep costs down. Merlins are too expensive and rare. If it was flying at Half Moon Bay it was likely an Allison that was heard.

My bad. I'm not a fly guy, I just know what I heard was awesome. It could very well have been a Merlin powered plane. I'm quite sure I heard one at the Watsonville Fly In.

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"

They may not have been that good in planes, but they were a staple in the unlimited Hydros for years. And there was this guy.... http://www.dragracingonline.com/nowthen/viii_9-1.html

Hey, point of clarification... Was there ever a Special that had a speedo that read past 85 mph?

And good job for representing us all vicariously, and representing us well at that.

Only the '79 Special... every XS after that had those 85 mph speedos until they came to their senses... after the XS was out of production.

Not quite correct. Non US models had 160 or 240 km/h speedo's, depending on where they were going. Mine was a Canadian model with a 240k dial.

"Ed you are about to have a brand new speedo at 0000000"
Heh, heh, this is an old photo. The speedo turned over about a year or so ago. I actually wore it out and replaced it with a salvaged one that came with 30,000 or so on it. Due to riding for a month with a broken cable, and riding Lord knows how long with an optimistic clock, I don't know the true mileage, but I estimate it at around 130,000!
