  • Carb Diaphragms

I'm working on three carb sets that were disassembled when I bought them. Everything is in good shape but the diaphragms (as most rubber) have "shrunk" a little making them hard to set into the channel under the carb cap.

Anyone have any ideas on how to "stretch" the diaphragms or put some material in the channel that will hold the diaphragm in place. They are in good shape just a little out of shape at the top.

    Thanks,

    Doug,

I have had decent success with this by just pulling them lightly and then pushing them into the channel and using a thin very rounded edged metal spatula to hold them down while I got the top in place then gently pull the metal out while holding down with the top. It takes several trys, but eventually get there.

I've heard of a feeler guage(s) being used to hold the diaphram down, then slip it/them out with the cap in place.

        +1

Had SWMBO hold the gauges. Used two. Made it a ton easier.

Rub and stretch gently with silicone and then put some vaseline in the groove to help the diaphragm stick in the groove as you put the cover on.

Thanks to all who responded. Will try a little Vaseline and some feeler gauges.

Spray them with spray silicon lube and get them nice and clean. Make sure they are not cold, and using all your fingers, work the diaphragm into the groove and just hold it there for a few minutes. The diaphragms will stretch back out and you should then be able to quickly get the cap on. This is all that you need to do. It happens on every set if the diaphragms are out for a while.
