Back in my younger days I would regularly ride from Phoenix, AZ to Modesto, CA and back for holidays. 700 miles each way. Did it on a 400 Honda.

Personalized solo seat helped. Clubman bars. Strapped my backpack to the tank (poormans tankbag) and layed on that, tucked behind the windscreen.

I would start with a shorter day, and then work up to 700 to 800 miles per day. Running on the superslab it's easy to put on the miles, but not much to see for the most part. I have been across the country on motorcycles, and every time I start easy and then I'm ready to just let the miles roll. I have made 1K miles in 23 hours on my '79, but that's been about 4 years ago when I was young. That leg of the trip was Stillwater, OK to Cleaveland, OH in the summer.

They think I'm a crook who's run off with my card!
I HATE it when that happens... I just drove from DC to San Diego towing a trailer behind my Rover, and we spent HOURS talking to the banks telling them we're not thieves. Sheesh.

And I had ok gear, waterproofed leathers, long-johns, a wool sweater, even a scarf... but that 40 degree damp air just cut right through it all. I'd alternate hands on the bars so I could keep one at a time on the engine.

my longest day so far on the bike was from my house in Minden NV, to Santa-margarita, CA for the rally there last year. Somewhere around 500 miles, I left at like 2 or 3 in the afternoon and got to the campground around 11.
Not a bad day, I could have done more, and I didn't take the super slab at all, I wanted to see the back roads and enjoy the scenery. The worst part was going through Yosemite, the first weekend in june its still really cold up there. I brought some warm(er) clothes but not the stuff I would have packed had I realized how cold that stretch of the ride would be.

About 500 miles, backpack on tank, laying down with feet on the back rests. And it rained the last 30 miles or so just to let us know who was boss. No rain gear, no windshield, in Oct, in Mn. ( But, I'm older and smarter now.)

                Worst

First week in April. Picked up my bike from PO. This was our first ride together.

300 miles From North Central South Dakota to Minneapolis, MN and left at about 5pm. Dark came fast and cold came faster. 1 long johns, 2 jeans, 2 hooded sweatshirts, leather jacket, 2 pair gloves, bandana on head and one wrapped around face. I had to stop about every hour to warm up. When I arrived at the destination I checked the weather and it was 25 F outside at about midnight. And yes I saw some of that white stuff falling from the sky a few times.

                We bonded on that trip.
