  • How many miles per day....

When on the road for long trips, how many miles do you go on a good day? Those who have ridden with me will tell you I'm brutal about getting gas and getting back on the road and rarely stop between tankfuls. I hoping to do 700 mi on the first day, leaving around 5 AM or before. Averaging 60 mph it should take 11 hrs and 40 min. The first day will depict how many I do following. LOL
You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life...

600-700 is easy on interstate. I've done as much as 800 on back roads by myself. That was brutal.

I do the same, dont even stop to eat. 14 hours is the most I ever did, gas only. But then I have never gone on a leisure trip. It was always a destination type thing.

12 hours. A little over 600 miles kicked my butt good. All time best was about 750 but will not do that again unless its a real must do.

          How many miles per day....

          Planedick,
My longest day in the saddle was 820, 16 hours on the longest day of the year. I took the next day to attend the event that I went to and did 820 back home the following day. It takes it's toll on you, but it can be done.
As I remember, I didn't ride for a week after my return.

Depending on the roads and weather conditions... I get somewhere around 600 - 800 miles a day without too much problem.

My longest ride has been 430 miles on a naked bike in one day boy was I beat when I got there. While there I got a small windshield and the ride home was an easy one. I could have gone a few more hundred miles the way I was feeling.

                700. Could have gone farther, but didn't have farther to go. That was on a hard old seat. With the Diamond seat and a long day, more is possible, but not probable due to the price of gas.

It depends on where I'm going and the type of trip it is. If I just want to get to a destination I push it with little sleep Up to 1000 miles in a day (Utah to Florida in 48 hours). If I have no particular place to be I take my time and stop to see the sights, anywhere from 100 mile to 600 miles depending on what I find. I would thing an average of 400 to 500 miles a day would be good.

400 - 500 is a good daily average. Have done more but enjoyed it less. More is certainly possible, I've done 600 - 700 miles quite often on both the XJ (The Diamond seat makes it much less tiring!) and on the Concours, now with a new Russell Day-Long saddle. My place to Las Vegas is about 635 miles, for example, and I've made that run a few times. Longest single day was around 900 miles, comming back from the Bozeman Rally some years ago. I was trying to outrun a storm.

If you do 700 the first day you won't want to do the same on the 2nd day...

For me, key is to have different foot positions. I use the stock pegs, forward pegs, rear set, anything to keep my knees from locking up and this movement changes pressure points on the seat. Deep-knee bends and stretching at rest stops helps a lot.

I also use a throttle lock so I can occasionally rest my right hand and often ride with my left hand off the bars, you can trade off with a lock.

So much depends on what accessories your bike has, your riding gear, hydration, weather conditions, it is hard to give a reasonable answer but while 700 miles is quite possible, back-to-back 700 mile days is not much fun, particularly if they are your first 2 days out.

I think if I was doing a long, multi-day liesure trip, where I had to be able to repeat the mileage day after day, I would stick with the 500-600 mile range. 700 miles is for a one-day trip to a destination IMO. Of course, the Iron-butt guys who have the training and knowledge to make a long trip more enjoyable might be able to do more.

I did 1126 miles in 22 hours for an Iron Butt run. 600 or so is a good comfortable day when sole. 400 to 450 is best I can do when wife is along. Don't ask why.

Wow, you dudes are tougher than I am, for sure... Longest I ever rode was 200 miles in a day. 'Course, it was from Sacramento to Pacifica and back... at night... in November... on a bare bike... just after a rainstorm. Made it home from Pacifica (100 miles) in just shy of an hour. ...and I stopped for gas.

Not something I'll ever want to try again. Not just because I was actually hypothermic when I got home and needed to take a warm bath, but because it was stupid and dangerous.

Next year I hope to do the "longest day" ride here in New Zealand.
A ride that takes you right around the coast of the South Island of New Zealand . Over some of the most fantastic riding roads grouped together in the world. A distance of just over 1000miles.
It is done each year by hundreds of bike entusiasts.
The starting point is your own house after loggong on to a web site.
The finnish is when you log back on, and fill in all the required information you gather along the way to "prove" you have visitied each designated location.
It can be done in one day, but most riders take two days. 500 miles each day.approx.
There are prizes given by the organisers.

Other wise the best I have done is 700 miles each way three weekends in a row from Christchuch NZ to Te Anau NZ, almost the furtherest south you can go. Done on my 79 1100E without a problem from the bike, and no sore butt either.

Shoot! That's a leisurely afternoon ride! Of course, it helps if you have the proper gear on for the weather, to make it enjoyable. The only annoying part about long rides for me is that my bank tends to put restrictions on my account because I've stopped at too many gas stations in one day. They think I'm a crook who's run off with my card!
