    Fire! Fire!

    Well I spent most of today working on My 79 sf. Got it running kinda. Was pleased with it running on is own I still cannot ride it. Need to title and insure also the front brakes are sticking. So with all that I decided to start the 80 standard. Pulled the battery from the 79 and fired the 80 up. Its been sitting over 24 years. Origanal carbs the floats are stuck. grabbed the spare carbs and tried them we had fire (yep the bike started on fire). Anyone in the area have free time to help me out? I am not good with carbs. I am not working so anytime is good. I can be reached at 815-994-1815 Please leave a message I only answer numbers I know.

        I actually enjoy working on these carbs, wish you were in my neck of the woods. I'm kinda weird, I always have my fire extinguisher handy (I mean I have it right next to me!) when I'm starting a bike for the first time after any major overhaul involving the fuel system.

        Good luck and since I like a thread with photos and I don't think you had time to take any...

          I actually had a really random thing happen about a week ago. I was cleaning some things and had a bit of a puddle going. I was banging some things around andI have a torch ignitor spark thing hanging on the wall behind my bench. The sparker fell and managed to land just right and sparked and lit the puddle on fire. It was quick flashing solvents so the fire only lasted about 5 seconds, but it just goes to show you just never know.

            My wife thought she was going to help put the fire out by blowing on it. Too bad she forgot about the hairspray she had just applied. I pulled her back quickly before we had a Jackson incident. Used the can of compressed air to put it out. Than threw my hands up and said thats it I'm done for the night. If I like beer I would have downed a 12 pack.

              Scary! Glad the fire was a quick one. I wish I could help, but you're just a tad too far away for an after-work garage meet.

                Is it possible if I pull the carbs and bring them to someone to have them fixed close enough to put back on and hopefully start?

                  Definitely. A thorough carb cleaning and setup should let the bike start for certain. You would then want to tune the mixture and synch to match the operation of each cylinder, but it should start.

                    Worked on the carbs today. Had trouble removing the pins that hold the floats in 3 bodies. Wanted to be smart about it and read up on how to remove pins. Found a cool write up in the maintenance section how to use side cutters to pull the pins said this method will get pins out without breaking the ears. Well it didn't work for me. Broke one ear off down close to the carbs. Guess that put an end to my day. I got a message from Bug offering help guess I'll go that route as soon as I get a check to cover postage. I really wanted to be riding this weekend.

                      I use a spring loaded center punch to remove the pins. I guess no method is fool proof. I had my broken post welded back on by MOTORCYCLECARBS.COM He did a good job saving my carb.

                        I use a small butane torch to heat the post that the pin is in. As you heat it up you will see the old gas that in dried up in there start to boil and bubble then I hit it with some sort of penetrating fluid and repeat. After I do that a couple times then I use a pliers so something and grab the head of the pin and twist it and just slowly work it out.

                          Just to be clear, I DID NOT break my float post with the spring punch method. The PO broke it and fixed it with JB weld or something and the repair failed.

                          Now, it's fixed.

                            Nate You mean small torch like a lighter type? I might have one of those in the toolbox. So the heat burns off all the old gas allowing it to move freely? Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question but I'm at wits end right now and would try about anything.

                              It's more along the lines of the heat expands the post, enlarging the hole, freeing up the pin. Of course the heat also loosens up any stiffened gunk that has collected in there as well.
