Does anyone remember the XS1000 at the Yamaha Las Vegas (I believe it was Las Vegas) dealer show in 1977? Probably was 1100 but it had XS1000 on the side covers. I have pics but they are on slides. Seems that other manufacturers came out with 1000cc motorcycles for 1978 but Yamaha trumped them with 1100cc.

If I remember correctly Yamaha scammed every one during testing and let them think it was a 1000.Then sprung the 1100 thing after the bike was in production.I'm not sure I have all the details but I sure someone will help me out. Terry1980 special (Phyllis)

I always thought it was called the XS11 because of engine displacement, however, the article linked by SFerin states it's because it ran an 11 second 1/4 mile. Learn something new every day!Richard

I was at the dealer show when the XS1000 (XS1100) was revealed. There was a movie screen setup and it showed the XS coming toward you down a winding road and it keep getting closer and closer until it burst through the screen and was setting on stage. a moment I will never forget. Bought one after totalling my XS750D. Rode with many triple owners and we would have a roll on drag race about 60mph. XS11 in 5th gear and the triples would have to shift to third to keep up. I put 33,000 miles on mine. Leaky head gasket pushed me to sell it. Regret the decision to sell. Now own a XJ1100 Maxim with about 17,000 miles.
Will need wifes help to locate the slides of the XS1000. Hmmmm, could be a while.XJ1100

Yeah, Yamaha fooled EVERYBODY back in '77. They talked up the XS1000, even showed cutaway engine to the press, but would NOT let anyone take measurements! I know I ordered the XS1000 in June of '77, and took delivery of my XS1100 in September! Wish I still had the paperwork from then....
The XS11 got it's name from the displacement, but Yamaha ALSO wanted the FASTEST production bike on the planet! The final drive ratio is 3.32, and NOT the 2.97 of the 750 to make sure they hit the 1/4 mile mark.Ray Matteis

This is an old thread I know, bit I found some Yamaha gold on fleabay tonight. I decided I would look up xs1000 on eBay to check for listings with typos. I found a folder from the 1978 Yamaha service seminar with all sorts of paperwork on the xs1000.
I bought it and I'm super excited to read it. I'll scan it when it comes in and post it here.81 xs1100 SH

That was very cool, thanks for resuscitating this. I remember the first 1100s and had no idea.
Just to add, searching ebay for "xs1000" is also a way to find overlooked xs1100 items where the seller mistyped. Got a great deal on a tank that way.
Also I search on "eleven special" sometimes, those are folks who have no idea how to list and don't know anything about the bikes. got two side covers for $30 that way.Steve R
