The 85mph speedos didn't arrive until the '80 model year, the US version '79F had a slightly different paint scheme compared to the '78 so the 'missing' stripe on the sidecover is correct, but it is missing the handle. But that could have been removed for a rack/sissybar and lost.
The paint looks pretty decent, considering the sun exposure it's probably gotten in the southwest. Looks like a very nice, unrestored example. Very nice chrome from what I can see (I'm coveting those rear shocks...). Given the nicks/dings in the top of the tank, the price is a bit high for my taste, but seeing how they ain't makin' 'em anymore, it might not be a bad deal...

Why don't people just buy low miles speedometers and forget the bike? In comparison to the gem that just sold for $5K, this one is ragged. I question the miles and such too; shouldn't the '79 have an 85mph speedo?
Considering the condition of the clearcoat, blued pipes, and chrome pits, seems something is awry. And should it not have a gold surround stripe on the side covers? Look at the paint finish on the sidecovers and seat trim in comparison to the tank - no match.
It is also missing the lifting handle. Something is up here...
despite the great looking bike this is what i thought was crazy..."peruchust" also I dont care where, or how you stored this bike, there is no way that the original back tire from 1979 is still good...NO WAY AT ALL!...It would have been completely rotten...even off the ground...NO WAY! and the current bid is 3900 right now...but if it sells for that more power to him!...

Don't worry, it doesn't have the OEM tire on it. If you look at the pic of the rear brake, you can see the tire size; 120/90-17, or one size under current replacement size, and certainly not the 4.50H-17 Bridgestone these came with. Besides, given the mileage, the OEM tire would be worn out anyway. I was amazed at how fast mine ate the rear tire (first replacement at about 5k), much quicker than the XS2 I sold to buy the 11...

Q: I am interested to see if that $8000 starting price is a mis-print? Thanks!
A: Hello, and thank you for the inquiry! The opening bid is $8000 and not a misprint. The amount was determined using 3 criteria: Bike value, parts value, and I'm crazy. 1/3 of the worth is the parts (mostly the exhaust), and 2/3 the machine. In the last few years only one other pair of NOS mufflers (that I have seen), sold on eBay for $1600; that system was not as complete but equally as rare. There is an additional box of new parts that weighs about 40 pounds too; buying 40 pounds of Yamaparts will drain even the thickest wallet! Truly Minty E's in unrestored original condition are seldom offered or still exist, and usually trade in the $4.5K to $6K range unless divorce is imminent. In 1978, the XS11 was the most powerful motorcycle money could buy, and the flagship of reliability. Being fortunate enough to own one then, it was sure fun smoking off everything in sight with a stock Marooner. The XS11E is Yamaha's very impressive entry into the "Big 4-Banger" era of the CB750 & Z1, and a justifiably appreciating classic. Regards, Warren
