Actually looks like a fairly nice bike. Missing the original exhaust isn't all bad as I see it has the 4 into 2 Jardine spagetti pipes on it. Also get down there at times as my son and daughter-inlaw live there.

      -carbs-

Yep - I had sniffed that one out and have it bookmarked.
Just worrying in advance, those goldwing carbs which are my only gauge for the nasty level on carb work were, well, nasty - And goodness were the kits $. That experiance was with Q-tips.
So add to the shopping list 4 full carb kits, replacement inline filters, full tank clean, and the above mentioned filters. Time to fire up the search engine.
Thanks all for keeping me doing it right. I just want to ride it!

          -pipes-

Is that what those pipes are? I'll have to peek and see if the jets have been swapped. I had looked at how they rout around, as some members had mentioned how aftermarkets might get in the way for service, but I think in this case they might not cause that problem. They are a little on the loud side. It is ok on the street but I kill it before rolling into my complex for fear of ticking off the other tenants. (all 3 times I have been on it)

-spring is fickel in the midwest-

              Really? solid water?
I know what you are talking about actually, I grew up in WI and recall the snow unfairly hiding the eggs on Easter, and snow for tricker-treating, and hail in summer, and - well you know too. Are you on the north side of the state? My father is in the Milwaukee area and he was hopping to get his BMW out on Sunday (today) forcast was for a balmy 40F...
I think I may have overcompensated though, not much winter down here but we get quite the summer. It can be a bit much, and even more so if your waring a black leather jacket, pants, and a helmet while sitting at a stop on a black air cooled bike on a 100+ day in the sun on tarmac. I can't WAIT

On that note: 4 carby kits should be finding their way to me now as well.
I'm burning up my bank account but I'll pay it off while I'm riding.

Waiting isn't always the Hardest Part...

                    Sol,

Here's two "cautionary tales" you can read while you wait for parts to arrive:

                    Oil Filter Bolt

                    Missing Washer/Spring

Hopefully your tasks will go more smoothly.

Also, good decision IMO to go into all the carbs as fuel leaks can spill outside the carbs (Fire Hazard...) OR leak fuel into the cylinders where it thins out the oil to the degree bearing damage results.

                    Good Wrenchin'!

                      Thanks for the reading

I have been cramming but in a rather unguided manner, more on the "cool" stuff like fork braces, oil coolers, spin off oil filters and dream on so on. Though I have also got the e-manual from Catatonic Bug (Thanks!), been re-reading the carb 101 post, and tank cleaning too...
The second link there - good info - I might have missed that sticky washer.
It's just so tempting to take some short cuts to get on it, so I keep asking "please do I have to?" The GL1100 was such a crushing dissapointment. I'm thinking of trying the electrolytic rust removal method on the tank followed by some navel jelly. The rust is not horrible (light orange algae stage) but I should just do all this stuff at once.
THEN ride the L out of it.

That reminds me - get some photos.

                      Thanks for the interest!

                          -That is the stuff-

Thanks for the info! I must have missed it when I was last looking for the stuff and only found the jelly.

                          On another note:
I have been doing some reading on here and managed to confuse myself
If I read right then petcock position is correct when the handle is covering the label of the function you want. Is that right? If so I have been bassakwards, mine have a little white line opposite the handle and I took it to be the indicator. No matter really, I would need a rebuild either way, as if that is the case I made it 150+ miles with my petcocks off
We seem to be missing the smiley to handle this emotion...testing...

                          All of the above?

                            Smiley check -- check!

Yes, the petcock lever points to the position; fooled me too when I first got my XS and the darn thing wouldn't start.

                              Sorry I have been MIA

The various stuff I ordered is starting to trickle in & I have been gathering work supplies during my offline time.
For example: I needed a work station and just dragged a new folding table home today. I need some odds and ends up yet, but some denatured alcohol, freezer bags, cardboard, and work time not already allocated to work and we should be able to get this farce on the road
                              - minus one thing - I hit up several auto supply stores today looking for rubber gasket material they they just looked at me like I was nuts. Guess they just sell plastic bling and things from catalogs

Anyone got a line on who might sell rubber sheet?

It just occurred to me I might have an opportunity here to abuse tools from the work place on this project. -Never pass up an opportunity!-
That Flexxi Cam no one uses might be handy to get a good look at something other then directly under the gas cap.

Ah, well I'm righting like I'm mumbling to my self. I am mumbling to myself time to call it a day guys, Thanks!

I have never foumd an auto store that didn't have various kinds of rtv gasket maker. Permatex is the most common kind. It isn't rubber though it is a silicone compound.
