    LED License light

Since I did away with the stock taillight - I needed a new light to shine on my plate.

I had some of these 12V LEDs (this ones white, but I have orange ones for later) and a stick pen.

So I threaded the wires down the tube and added a little heat to give it some direction. The tube end I split and drilled for mounting.

I covered the whole thing in shrink wrap to make it more stiff and invisible. It mounts to the same bolt holding the bracket.

    Here it is installed.

And a view in the dark - it lights up as intended and should pass inspection OK.

Just need that seat and longhorns

Yeah, you need those longhorns there in place of that tool bag there on the front in my opinion. That or just above the headlight.

Really pleased with how its running now..

Was out riding with my wife and on way home at the light pulled up next to a Hardley Nightster riding solo. As I began to pull away when the light changed I heard him start to roll on the throttle hard like he was going to overtake me, so I left it in 3rd and just cranked it - he never even got to pull even as I left him behind.... and the funny part was I was 2-up

Now if I could just resolve the hard to start issue that began when I switched over to the pods- I suspect even the choke is not rich enough for the now lean mixture.

            got TC's fuse box

Now I went to look again at the box I hadn't seen since I bought the bike -

            Just haven't needed to -

What I found is NOT what the Yamaha engineers designed...

That last set of wires is I think the ignition circuit - the Clymer's is not real clear on their diagram - there are 2 sets of red wires - red/ylw (#2 slot) and red/wht (#4) - the blu/blu (#1) go to the lights and the big brown ones (#3) shut off the blinkers - why they are such heavy guage I do not know

So since everything seems to be working despite not being in the same order as in the book, I am going to wire it exactly as it is into the new fuse block and add fuses according to the ratings in the book -

the 30amp "MAIN" fuse - is this the fuse at the AUX terminals?

The book mentions 4 fuses - if I had to guess I would have thought the 30 amp circuit was the BRN/BRN large guage wires in my #3 slot

              Hi John,
if the book sez 4 fuses it's your '78 Standard (The '80 has 5 fuses)
The main 30 Amp fuse is the one that's powered from the starter solenoid so it's "hot" all the time.
The main fuse feeds power to the ignition switch and to the separate aux fuse which is also "hot" all the time.
A tan wire comes back from the ignition switch and feeds the other fuses so they are only "hot" when the ignition is turned on.

This is the SG right? There are 5 fuses, but one is in a rubber holder in front of the battery. Only the one looks abused there so what you propose sound good, but you might take the one in front of the battery and move it to the new fuse box too, although I didn't move mine and haven't had any trouble, not sure if it's just cause the main fuse being inside a sealed unit like it is tends to stay good or if it's just that I'm lucky, but I'm not going to try and fix what ain't at the moment broke (I carry fuses, crimps and such so if needed I could pull the master fuse out and replace it with a blade fuse in an inline holder on the side of the road if needed), but being generally pretty firmly in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" camp I'm just gonna leave it the way it is (and carry a spare fuse too), the rest is if the spare fuse don't work.

                  yes this is the Special

the Standard is in California and I don't work on it much except for emergencies because I am only there a week at a time for work.

Here is the finished new fusebox - I moved it up a bit to the upper mount holes so I could re-route the wires underneath - otherwise they draped over the cover and not only looked messy it was hard to remove the cover -

I didn't add the other wire - the one in front of the battery - I found it and its little spare fuse holder and figured like you I'd leave well enough alone.

I did notice the dreaded leaking galley plug in front of engine -

So that will be next week's project as I am traveling tomorrow for the weekend.

Added 4 orange LEDs for fun...

So I added a switch under the right side cover...

Here it is from another angle - the LEDs are wired to the accessory + terminal so it can be on without the key from the switch, but the switch is hooked to the negative lead so it controls when they get ground instead of power - I felt the switch was too exposed to have hot leads.

Here you can see them tucked under the seat and tank area - its bright in the garage, but you get the idea - it shines on the pods and back of the engine area with a nice glow - not real bright but more subtle.

Anyway - it doesn't add much light but just something fun.

                    Still waiting on the seat!

                            vacuum source

OK when I put on the pods, I put a nipple in the end of one and hooked to into a Tee on the crankcase breather tube to try and suck excess fumes out.

Well apparently it isnt enough vacuum.

I still am getting wisps of smoke from the breather under the seat. I can only notice it at a stoplight, but dont want to smoke in public

Should I tap each of the pods or do you think I am barking up the wrong tree?

Without an airbox there isnt another vacuum source behind the carbs.

How have folks dealt with this before?

If you look, the stock airbox actually seems to have some sort of velocity system that creates a bit of a vacuum at speed, but depends on that large chamber to capture the stuff at idle and such. I don't thing that there is any other way around it, unless you just make the fitting big enough to do away with the breather all the way and split it off into each of the pods basically duplicating what the airbox did. I'm not sure it's worth the effort though.

Do you have a filter on the breather still? I would say get rid of the filter and just go with the hose to the pods.
